Topic author: toubab1020 Subject: Remittances Posted on: 17 Nov 2008 10:53:49 Message:
Once again Gambians who rely on remitances from abroad will suffer, jobs abroad are being cut what will the effects be on the poor and jobless in Gambia? Can H.E. do anything? Can Obama do anything? This from The Point

Snippet: Here in The Gambia we still depend very heavily on money coming back from Europe and the United States and any change in this could leave many facing financial ruin. The other major concern at the moment is the exchange rate.

No matter where you are the big news everywhere seems to be the economy. If it's not the housing crisis, it's gas prices. We wont even talk about the price of milk and bread these days. I can't begin to tell you how many people I know that say that not only can they "not" go out but also cuting back on essentials. So this is bound to effect money being sent back to Gambia. Also how is this going to effect the hotel trade who I see are charging there usual prices as is Gambia Experience. As the saying goes we all have to cut our cloth according to our means

Yes Snuggels, lets cut our cloth etc..........but I contentedly live my life like this. I havent bought into credit cards or overdrafts etc.since 1999. Whilst cutting my cloth,I enjoy alot of mod cons as does the poorest of people here in the UK.
I live with the world in mind...so my only personal experience of this credit crunch is the scaremongering by the media and the increase in basic foods.(although I have a mortgage)
People in Gambia have been experiencing the increase for the past two years or so, in basic living needs....this leads me to believe the credit crunch happended to them long before us.
I also believe that in the UK we do not experience the real struggles in the world in just surviving. This so called credit crunch will hopefully get us to cut all our cloths and start beginning to get real. its an opportunity to get Communities here thinking and working together for the better of the whole.
I wish people would treat where they live as their homes, instead of as an investment in money.
My question is......if rich people/corporate bodies are suffering, what happened to all the money they made in previous years ?
Maybe I am naive, but I think we can get some positives out of this if we only start to think creatively.

taps you are right that some people did get caught up in the credit card, buy now, have noe, pay later situation, BUT i work in customers services and the amount of reduncies has a knock on effect. i do believe we in UK will have to make some serious lifestyle adjustments. BUT SOME OF THE BANKS AND GOVERNMENTS SHOULD LOOK AT THEMSELVES FOR THE STATE OF THE FINANCIAL CRUNCH. WHO SAW THE ICELANDIC GOVERNMENT not looking after their own banks. NOBODY
