wonder if anyone can advise me what amount to pay a girl for working in the compound washing cooking etc, she will be living in rent free and food she is a member of my adopted family that already i support with food and accomodation health and school fees...the mail of the family is not working ... would appreciate any advise on a fair gambian price... regards abraham

I THINK THE GOING RATE IS 700 - 1,000 DLS, that is what i heard on my last trip, but she also received lots of other things, meals, food for family, books etc. but cash in hand 700 - 1,0000 dls. but i am upside because of the exchange rate  |

I agree with that. About 800 d is ok for a maid. especially if she is having her meals and lodging. We tried paying more but then it is assumed you are stupid and our maids either cheated or stole from us. From Del

ok, thanks Jambo - I pay around 800 weekly as Im only in my compound five weeks a year at present; so I pay over the odds as a retainer.

My Gambian friend told me that a regular salary for a maid who does the cooking, cleaning and so on should be around 1200 dalasis. That is including meals but not housing. I suppose it also depens on how much work there is to do and also how old she is - if she is a girl or a grown-up woman. |
