CHINA IN AFRICA
REFLECTIONS ON CHINAS GROWING ECONOMIC INFLUENCE IN AFRICA
China's influence in Africa has grown dramatically in the last 10-15 years. Beijing currently invests millions of dollars in projects in more than a dozen countries in Africa. China is rapidly expanding its engagement in Africa through concerted diplomatic, financial and military assistance. Trade between China and African nations jumped 39% to $32.17bn (£18bn) in the first 10 months of last year, official Chinese customs figures have revealed.
Africa Centre for Information and Development (ACID) is organizing an international seminar to debate Chinas post cold war engagement in Africa. The seminar seeks to highlight the implications this unprecedented development has for African countries in both economic and political terms. A question of central interest is also how the development will impact on the traditional ties the continent has had with both Europe and the U.S.A.
