it has become evident to me over the last couple of years , that this forum has begun to degenerate into a place of pettiness, squabbles, personal abuse, racism, hatred, rudeness, incivility and hostility. i have had some good "rows" over the years here, with a few verbals given, and some received. it was part of the "debate protocol", accepted by some, feared by others and abused by a minority.but it was within limits.
recently, it has become the norm and i , personally, suspect that the major contributors over the years have become conspicuous by their absence in a large part due to this and this alone.
i now refer you to the nonsense going on on the "racism in the gambia " thread between me-me, fee-sweetie and babylon. some of them often refuse to debate with the "playground mentality" of others that they like to quote, yet here they are at it like hormonal cats with their claws out.
this forum is close to becoming a waste of (cyber)space.
if people want to continue to benefit from lively, intelligent and purposeful debate, then a sea-change of attitude is required.
this process is a lot further down the line then some would like to admit.there is virtually never a debate without anger and insult these days. maybe it was ever thus, but i feel it was more civilised in the past and is just becoming crap now to participate when you know that some will get personal, especially when their points are shredded by more informed contributors. this is an observation. you can respond if you wish. it's just my view from here. i am getting to the stage where i am almost done with this bantaba for the above reasons. there is a difference between humour, sarcasm, debate, arguments and the like and old-fashioned, plain, spite, malice, ignorant racism and hatred. perhaps the last ever thread here will be called "racism in the bantaba"

Go lurker, for some it is a form of communication but some posting can get really heated and rude, but i bet if they met face to face they would be friends and less insulting |

That's so true! It's too easy to hide behind an alias/screen and insult people you don't know! Imagine trying to have a discussion face-to-face when the other person keeps on saying "hold on a minute, must consult google/wikipedia/whatever for a reply to your statement" |
