Ode to the I-35W Bridge

Right by the heart of Downtown cities
less than a mile from my heavenly abode
stood the ever flowing Mississippi river
flowing west to east, flowing
in its friendly natured manner, flowing
Ode to the great Mississippi, Ode aloud!

The great ever friendly Mississippi
with its many thousand smiles
supporting over ten thousand lakes
carrying the ships, the boats
and the tens of hundreds of bridges aloft
to and fro, north to south
transporting some to work
others to school
and others to businesses elsewhere
Ode to the great Mississippi, Ode aloud!

One day, the pegs holding the famous I-35W bridge
stumbled to pieces of stones and metals
just in the evening rush hours of heavy traffic flows
squatting down to the river bottom
with loud thunder echoes
with all its contents
causing deaths of innocent lives
and routing traffic to far away crossing bridges
Ode to the I-35W bridge, Ode aloud!

Today Sept. 18th, all pegs rose to heights
the crossing bridge is back to its height
traffic running across the one time friendly river
with caution for a safe crossing to banks ashore
friendly, as ever it was
so indeed is life on earth
hope after despair always
the I-35W bridge is back to its full shadows
with friendly waters flowing underneath
from west to east, flowing
in its usual friendly manners, flowing
Ode to the I-35W bridge, Ode aloud!

Ode aloud, Ode!

Nice poem bro Dalton, It seems to be a like a breath of fresh air after a suffocating grip on the throat; here, you depicted a happy ending to the disaster of that famous bridge. Life goes on as if the sad incident did not happen but people do have memories and this is one of them .Thanks for sharing yours .

I tell you something: That bridge means a lot to me, and many others. For years, I lived just about one third a mile from it. On the day/time of the incident, i was luckily in class, and traffic congestion could have trapped me right in it (about 30 mins interval). Before I got home, family members gathered in my residence, calls from far and near. Scary one that was.

The length of the bridge is very short. The bridge is probably more famous than all other tens of hundreds of bridges crossing the mississippi river in the area. Why? The simple reason is I-35W N/S is a major highway, connecting to many cities/highways/railways on the other side where the universities/colleges, other schools, work places, businesses et cetera are located. When the incident happened, traffic was routed around to other places/bridges. That created an unfriendly environment in traffic congestions.

The spot where the bridge collapsed is the place for the july 4th fireworks in the area, in addition to being the smile of the city, because the towers of city looks down on these bridges. It is a great area for fun fishing, and boat/ship excurssions. Alongside the great biking, driving, walking paths it provides for leisure.

The good news is the bridge is fully operational with many driving lanes. Thanks for your comments bro Kaanibaa. Indeed it is fresh air breathing and a great relief for the neighborhood, though the loss created bad memories, in the case of at least the 13 people that died in it.
