toubab, I think that every single word in this piece is true. Dependency makes people weak. This is why - on the political and economical level - the industrial nations are doing their 'best' to keep the resource nations dependent.
On an individual level, it is the same: If the money for the whole family comes from Europe/USA, people at home may feel incapable of standing on their own feet. What young people learn is that 'there is no chance in Gambia'. One Euro for every time I heard this questionable and dangerous dogma from youngsters, and I would be a rich woman. But of course they need jobs. |

'...It’s clear to note that the one who controls your stomach will always serve as your superior. Why not feed yourself to become the master of your own stomach?' Never a truer word spoken. I cannot agree more with this article. I know a Teacher who is married with 5 of her own children, she works as does her husband and two of the older daughters every evening after class she rushes home to cook not only for her family of 7 but also for her three brothers who live in the next compound. These dependants are fit and healthy men aged from 20 - 30 who do absolutely nothing all day apart from sit outside with their friends chatting and drinking attaya!!! She told me that she did at one time share this'responsibility' with her two other sisters who have now moved and now it was left to her. When I asked why these many couldn't feed and clothe themselves I never received a clear answer just its the 'Gambian way'

National service or an environmental peace corp would scatter the cat amongst the pigeons.
See how quick Gambian youth would run and go get a job. If they were forced to clean out the gutter system, pick up litter, mend fences, dig pit latrines, mend gutters, general do the countless jobs in the country that need doing!
If the youth think that they can sit down on their buts all day following some of those middle aged men who think that getting their hands dirty is beneath them. Then there needs to be some policies put together to radically assist these Bumsters in making a U-turn to step up to the plate and start working on nation building.
Really what the youth need is ambition, discipline and to understand that hard work is the only way forward for the majority of people to get some where in life. You not going to get laying on your back front or side or sitting on your butt drinking attaya.
Forgot about tourism dollars and start getting your hands dirty remember everyday your belly needs food.
Can you hear that electic broom humming!!

The article did thump the nail on the head, very good point.
“We all know that if someone is very young he or she needs the support and care of his or her parents and relatives. But this should not be continued for the rest of ones life.”According to the regulations/laws of culture and tradition the youth should takeover the breadwinning roll of the family on maturity and not remain dependent for life.
toubab1020, please explain what you mean by; … “or is it western propaganda poking again at African Culture and tradition?”

Janko, what I mean is that there is a perception in the west that Africa has had vast amounts of Aid money pumped into various countries in Africa, this project that project, and very little of that project money shows in improvements in the country and the wellbeing of the population, things just don't appear to improve to the western eye,as I said this is a perception, and as has been mentioned here Africans appear to have a tradition of perhaps letting one person work and that person feeds many so the fruits of his labour are shared with his family, friends.whoever, these perceptions may be wrong, hence my questions, for discussion. |

I wish the youth could forget the tourist dollars , but they cannot, a bit more inward development would help, the new buses for the north bank should increase moveability between villages and towns that should get things moving and creat a different industry, goods from farm to market etc" |

Toubab1020 I hear this a lot. The television is awash with various commercials here asking for £5 a month for this project £10 a month for that, then celebrities are rolled out year after year here and on the other side of the pond asking for your pledges etc etc. Yet there's now an apathy felt as, like you say westerners feel there's little or no progress. Although those of us that visit regular see the change however small each time.
If I had a pound for every time recently ive heard the argument 'You cannot help those that wont help themselves' I could give up work! |
