Criminal Affairs wasn’t that easy in ancient time. there was A king assisted in his government by many civil servants and ministers. The king was the head of government of the empire. It was very powerful and its decisions were paramount. Most civil servants were Muslims Soninke, who could read, write and had great knowledge about the world. According to Al-Bakri, The king asks some of them to bring new rules about criminal case. The criminal cases were handled by order. Al-Bakri described the trial in these terms: "when a person was accused of having denied a debt, having killed or have committed other crimes, a man took a piece wood of a sour and bitter taste of water poured over and gave the drink a drink to the accused. If the accused vomited, his innocence was accepted and it was bliss. If he does not vomited and that drink still in his stomach, the prosecution was justified. The king then proceeded to the prescription of a sentence based on the laws and traditions ".
This type of trial was not only own a empire of Ghana. It is already practised in other ancient civilizations.
The civil cases were those that resulted from a conflict involving 2 or more persons on the rights they shared, or when people seeking redress or compensation from the government for violation of his rights. In these cases, the government pursued him even citizens.
According to El-Bakri, the king gave a royal audience to people every day to listen to their complaints and try them. The hearings were public and royal started by the beating of a drum called "deba." The deba "was actually a long piece of wood sanctified. People arrived at the court of King when they heard the sound of deba. Al-Bakri told that the king sat in a flag and listened patiently to complaints while soldiers stood around him, holding shields and swords in gold.On his right was placed his children and men of laws of the territories conquered, splendidly dressed, hair decorated with gold. The mayor sat in front of the king, and all around the royal ministers and advisers were sitting.
