as a visiter to your friendly country can anyone tell me,if credit, debit, prepaid cards can be used over the counter in any bank.? as dalassi is only given in atm 2000 at a time, and atm.s here are not always working, the system keeps on breaking down. also why the 100 dalassi is the highest available bank note? please don.t tell me because it,s a poor country! i,ve been to other countries just as poor, but they have notes in higher denominations. sincerely.westerner.

Ah..........Lamby,( westerner) you are in Gambia a place of very quiet progress and confusion,Gambians are very new to plastic money and don't really like it, they would sooner the paper stuff...like all banks Gambian banks (sorry banks in the Gambia!) like making money so the D2000 limit ,there is probably a little protection policy against fraud theft etc. built in as well,I have never known a Gambian bank to deal with plastic and give out cash , bigger denominations ? probably a bit confusing and banknotes cost money to print.ATMs breaking down, of course they do, if they didn't it could throw a bank cashier out of work, and its modern technology.! However all is not lost Gambia Experience tour operator at their office at Senegambia will help you out if you are stuck BUT ONLY if you travelled with them. |

As a matter of interest. The best cards to take are Nationwide and Abbey Zero as they dont rip you of with charges like the big 5 banks
Also the Post office now do a card for travelers who dont like taking money. You put what ever amount on the card before you go and with draw the cash as is your want up to the amount you have put on the card.
Hope this helps |

if possible take paper money, or travellers cheques, when you use the credit card from the hole in the wall, the charges back homde can by eye watering, try to work out a budge, or if you are planning a big spend, have money sent to you by WESTERN UNION to reach gambia a couple of days after your arrival. happy spending |
