Long overdue, but did they arrive? ,there is a blank page except for the headline have a look:
http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/2008/7/25/jammeh-inaugurates-new-fleet-of-buses
I found this, its only about a new bus company not new Busses that are here.
President Jammeh on Tuesday inaugurated a newbus company called Unique Transport Company (UTSCO) as part of celebrationsmarking the fourteenth... inaugurates, fleet, buses, new, jammeh
Definition: The act of inaugurating, or inducting into office with solemnity; investiture by appropriate ceremonies

Here is a picture of the busses from the DO was it taken in The Gambia or somewhere else, anybody know?.
http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/photo/2008/8/5/30
Its true that the bus in the picture bears the number plate BJL 1612F which must be a Gambian registration number
Are the busses in use by members of the travelling public in Gambia? |

Just returned and seen these buses working./ They cost less than the local gilli gillis which is causing a real problem for local drivers who are trying to make a living. There are lots on the Serrekunda - Brikama route. No one I spoke to knew who owned them but they are undercutting the livelihood of many people. Now, I know public bus companies are a good idea and can help the ordinary person (by being 2 dalassi cheaper)- but if you just think how many vans use that route too then you will see that quite a number of local drivers are now having a problem. Quite a dilemma really and I say that because two good friends support their families by driving and are now struggling! |

Thanks Lily for that information I must admit that I was surprised when there was no follow up in the newspapers after the initial "inaugration" by H.E.The interesting statement now of course is the one posed by Lily "There are lots on the Serrekunda - Brikama route. No one I spoke to knew who owned them but they are undercutting the livelihood of many people" |

I am sure the local people are not caomplaining about the 'affordable' source of transportation the buses bring, regardless of who owns them. |

Yes I also think that these new busses are a very good thing,I know that there are now going to be minibus drivers out of work but it has been the case for some time that the cost of fuel has had the effect of making minibus fares at regulated prices a loss making excercise, minibusses from Westfield terminating their journey before they reach Banjul, but you could take the same minibus from the termination point all the way to Banjul, for another fare of course!

I think it's quite hard really - especially when I see it from the point of view of my friends who are struggling to eke out a living. Of course the local people will appreciate the lower fares and I agree that's a good thing but as the prices of the mini buses are fixed I just think it would be fairer all around if the prices of the buses were fixed at the same rate. Then the playing field would be level.
For me, personally, I am interested in ownership - who bought them, who benefits from them? |

We all know who owns them...I know you feel for your friends, and that what friends are for. However, the local people are least concerned with who owns the buses. Frankly, If I were local paying a bus fare I will careless about who owns the buses.
Personally, I dont think fares whether minivans, taxis or buses [or any other good or service]should be fixed. All we need is healthy competition. |

I totally agree that prices should not be fixed - but they are. So I just think it's fairer if they are fixed the same for all! |

lily they were fixed but the drivers did silly things like not completing th enetire route and forcing people to make two trips, also the state of the buses, they were a hazard, secondly time keeping, too few for so mnay people. |

This is perhaps the full report that should have appeared in the D.O. of 29th July almost a month ago, could "someone" have been nosing around this bantaba and let off a firework behind someone to get things moving?, I wonder.
