Growing up in the Gambia in the 60s and early 70s one seldom hear about homicide. Nowadays we read about murders almost weekly.
The story below is another sad event for the family and congregation of the deceased Imam of Kuntaur Wharf Town. The murdered Imam is said to have been tied and stabbed several times and his abdomen cut open by his murderer/s.
My sincere condolences to the family.

Tuesday, June 17, 2008 Reports reaching this paper from the Central River Region have intimated that the Head Imam of Kuntaur was in the early hours of yesterday morning stabbed to death in his house. Amadou Jallow, 30, was reported to have been stabbed 16 times by yet unknown assailants as he prepared to go and lead the early morning prayers at the mosque....... http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/2008/6/17/kuntaur-imam-stabbed-to-death

It is sad news indeed.
This is very un-common of our Gambia.

I hope the doers will face justice to the maximum.

For whatever reason(s) this Imam was murdered it is COWARDLY and DISGRACEFUL act.
May Allah grant him a place in the highest of Jannahs. May his family have the fortitude to go thru this tough moment in their lives.
I dnt know where we heading to. Momodou's observation about the high rate of murders brought my mind to this hadith of the noble Prophet(SAW)
Narrated by Abu Huraira (Radhiallaho anho): Allah's Messenger (sallAllaahu `alaihi wasallam) said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, a time would come when the murderer would not know why he has committed the murder, and the victim would not know why he has been killed. Sahih Muslim Number 6949 |

It is indeed a sad loss for Kuntaur and any decent society. This is unbelievable and I happen to know the guy when I met him during my last visit to Gambia.
He was young but very famous and well educated in the Koran. He was only 26 when he was appointed the Imam of a big town like Kuntaur. He took over from another imam who briefly served after his father. That Imam died as well.
His father was a very well known Imam and well respected in the community. The young Imam was growing to be very famous.
Whatever the motive of his killers, this young promising leader should never have died such a brutal death. May his soul rest in perfect peace!!!

Fights in Mosques were frequent in Bundung. It was a problem of who controls power. Traditionally, the religious leader is above all authority and even political appointees in the community tend to reserve some unspoken authorty to the Imam.
But to kill in this manner is beyond comprehension. The culprit(s) should be brought to book quickly and without delay. This is jungle law and must be dealt with swiftly. May his soul rest in peace and may the family have the fortitude to bear the loss.
The issue of inherting the position of Ima is being challenged all over. Years back it made sense when only perhaps one family were the teachers and as such better qualified. In todays ear, that is not the case. This is part of the wider assault on inheritance. My believe is that it should go to the most educated person in the community and not through the "Holy Grail".

You are right, fighting in mosques for leadership positions has been and still is a common occurence in many Gambian regions. It is time the Secretary of State for Religious Affairs or the Supreme Islamic Council to do something about it. It is quite unfortunate that someone had to be killed in such barbaric fashion. May his soul rest in peace.

Mawdo Kons;
Welcome back! You spoke well one more time.
The one i witnessed in bundung in the 90s was getting out of hand, to the extent that one was termed a '******' child. In banjul also, a similar situation occured.
Islam lays the way of choosing an Imam. If that way is followed, it will help to arrest some of these problems.
I hope this is a lesson to learn from. May the deceased rest in perfect peace.

Kons. you are absolutely right. I happen to come from a family that inherits imamship for several generations now. We still do. But I often joke (but seriously) that when my turn comes, that will be the end of it. I will let it go to the most qualified person in the community, or anybody else but me... Can you imagine me an Imam? Even Santafara will come and get me . But here is another story of an Imam (also an Islamic studies teacher)I know who allegedly took up a fifth wife ( not allowed in Islam I understand) and the mosque committee moved to depose him. He refused, and would come to the mosque leading the prayer with a knife threatening to stap anyone who attempts to remove him. Of course this even had the mosque divided into suporters and opponents... Sometimes these power struggles can be crazy... |

kay & Dalton
You are both right. I have been busy these days trying to advance myself. So i will see later but keep the Banataba what it is: a place for discussion.
I remeber the issue of the illegitimate child problem. Its all about power. A classic example is Ivory Coast where one can be Prime Minister but as President, one is accused of being a foreigner. If a foreigner is good enough to be Prime Minister what more position is he/she not good for.
Its all politics. He is young man of 30 years and does not deserve this. If people know the responsibilty of being Imam, i dont think anyone would rush to seek it. But again, power blinds one's judgement.
Those of you who have heard of the story of KOTCHI BARR MA, will agree with the Wolf saying: MAG JARR NA BAYI CHI KERR. I am dead sure such things would not have happened if people like Kulaymang Conteh, Dodou Ndow, Alhagi Nyang or Jalamang Keita were alive. |
