Calling anyone with more than one brain cell and a healthy level of tolerance/compassion ..... let's send HE Jammeh a loud message and vote with our feet (or even our air tickets/tourist income!)... Gambia as a tourist destination is now surplus to requirements!

Hey mum, are you trying to start a full scale war on bantaba??????

Have to say though my plans of going to the Gambia are on the back burner until things change for the better, it is not only Jammeh that I worry about but a lot of the negativity and hatred that is in a lot of the Gambian people I have met.

Oh Fee - as long as HE is not starting to behead people: please, try again. Negative and hateful people can be found anywhere. Give it another try and go upcountry, you'd be surprised about the hospitality and the absolute absence of a 'double agenda' (if you know what i mean). Anyway, i'll be going in the summer to meet the in-laws again and looking forward to seeing them. Mum MeMe, let's postpone a real boycot for a while. Am very much worried about gays' rights as you are, but i agree with Jammeh's stand on people going back to farming (hoping that his government will help starting farmers).

and you think Jammeh cares if you come or not ? Gambia needs tourist to come, tourism is the heartbeat of the nations economy at the moment and we should be encouraging people to go rather than try to scare them away. Boycotting will only hurt the everyday Gambian, not the leadership . There's a lot of homophobic nations out there, lets not mix tourism with politics.

As YY treathens hotel ownwers to close down their businesses if they allow gays I wonder how and what kind of tests they will organise.

Tourism faces a hard period as there are only 3 countries in world who are gay-free : Iran, Venezuela and soon the Gambia. I don't expect that tourism out of these countries will save the tourism industry.

Meme, why would i boycott Gambia, because of Yaya views, if that was the case I had no business going there many years ago. He took over a dictar, so why are we going to what is a dictarship country.
You are not making sense, boycott Gambia NO,
GET RID OF Yaya, now that is a different boycott.

I am anti all forms of intolerance from racism to sexism to homophobia. But part of what I can do is to show people, though intelligent conversation, that there is another way to be ...

So, I won't boycott the Gambia (too many responsibilities anyway) but
neither will I be totally silent if the occasion arises. (and no, I don't intend to shout out from every street corner!)

And Anna - when are you going? I am thinking of going in August. I've never been in the rainy season so could anyone tell me if I'm completely mad??

I'm no economist (and maybe see things too simply - simple is good? ) but I would assume that the money HE is spending on his women, cars and whatever will also come from tourist income .... so I think, in the end, he would indeed feel the pinch - not to mention the loss of face (to the rest of the African countries)if tourists starting voting with their feet. It's one thing to laugh behind your hand about his 'miracle cures' but the damage has already been done by allowing the population of the Gambia to think that persecution of homosexuals is ok! What next - the burning of witches (as in Kenya!)? The country is leaving itself open to mob-rule and, as history has already shown (in spades!) that's never a good thing.

No, call me stupid if you like but I will never set foot on that soil again until something is done about such blatant disregard for humanity. And before anyone starts ... no, I wouldn't go to the US either!!

No need for a boycot.
Jammeh reached the frontpage of all belgian newspapers with his treath to kill all gays.
He's boycotting his own touristic industry and potential investors. Violation of human rights...

Can now1 tell him to keep his big mouth shut?

And Anna - when are you going

Sorry Lily, saw your question just now. I will be leaving 11 July for two weeks. Immediately my (school's)holiday starts, i'll be off. I would have liked to go now in May or June, but that is not possible in view of our jobs. I don't mind the rain at all, but i know it will be hot and (worse) very humid. August is even more humid. To tell you the truth: i think it is the worst time of the year. We'll see the family in Serrekunda together, but when my partner is going to travel upcountry i will stay put along the coast - have to be near water
But let's hope the whole atmosphere has cooled down and that there will be no bloody executions But my partner misses his daughter and he needs to see her and be with her. Well, first things first!

Do not know why Gambians get so worked up about gay people. Do they interfere with straight people no in my experience. Would most Gambians know if a person was gay I doubt it. I see Gambian men holding hands and the first time I was there I thought they were gay.

So, the Dutch human rights ambassador and his plans to spur the EU to take a stand against H E Jammeh's misguided crusade have finally reached their rightful destination ....

Well done to the Netherlands for taking a stand while the UK did their usual 'we're an island' burying of heads in the sand! Another reason I miss that crazy flat country
