The termites of Timbucto Living in their kingdom Theirs is a life of misery Every day they toil The soil is so dry Yet they strive to make a living The lot of the termites of Timbucto Is not a happy one
As they toil Others try to foil Their efforts on that soil Undaunted they try even more Just to live dignified and humbly too
Oh! those termites of Timbucto See, their mighty towers Climbing up into the skies above Built on the strength of the poor To massage the egos of their heartless king Who shows them off to visiting dignitaries Unaware of the cost
Ask them ,none would But the pyramids of Misrah Were built by brute force Though we now marvel at their splendor Those who toiled then To set them up Were not proud of their job Uhm! the pain That pain which killed them daily Broken bones and bruised muscles Suffered without just recompense Unpaid labor for the king Who trampled on the poor As they fall down with exhaustion Just to see the finished Towers of Timbucto
The Mango Tree Standing in our backyard Is a huge mango tree Its mighty branches shading the yard Underneath we play Waiting for the ripe yellow fruits to fall
When any does We the children scramble for it The winner takes a juicy bite Mocking the rest of us Whilst we lick our lips Salivating hungrily we watch As he triumphantly munches away waiting to be offered a bite or two In vain at times
When a strong wind blows We get a good shaking of the tree Dropping so many fruits Which we each get a share of To eat to our fill
Otherwise one must bravely climb up Not knowing what lurks in the green foliage A snake or two is scary enough Ant attacks too are a possibility Those red ants that stick on and bite with lust Added to the risk of a broken branch Heavily laden with fruit Sending you tumbling down Like the legendary Humpty Dumpty To cry your eyes out As the rest of us Eat the luscious fruit with merry glee

Nice poem, Kaanibaa. A huge personification, looks like. "Termites of Timbucto", hmn...they "have a heartless king...shows them off to ...dignitaries". Oh those "red ants", i know very well for I used to "take a fill" from those juicy mango fruits too..."broken bones and bruised muscles"? How dare you say that of such nobler beings than man? Who else will "trample on the poor" who has already "suffered without just recompense"? Oh those red ants...until you "get a good shaking of the tree"...and then you are send "tumbling down"... Hmn, good poem... |
