Back home it was a practice to dump left over food and we used to call it Nyami nbaam otherwise known as pigs food.Nowadays I doubt that it is still being done, what with all this food crises world wide. I was just watching BBC and saw a news piece on people dumping food worth millions because mainly such food items had exceeded their sell by dates. The problem is so widespread and most of us are guilty of these acts. When one takes stock of all that is being wasted and then focuses on what others are struggling to get else where in food and feeding terms i suggest that this is scandalous. Some one even went on to comment that it is because of the affluence we now enjoy here that we tend to be so wasteful whereas others would give anything to get just a bit of what is being so shamefully wasted.Think about this!

Still more badly is our agriculture system, if one considered what we can do with the remaining of our million tones of food here but instead it has to simply waste in the garbage corner.
But like I already said that the system did not permit that.
A member of our parliament has already tried, that instead the millions of the D. Mark goes to the corrupt-craving Governing should converted to the agriculture system so directly that both side, here and third world will profit from each other, but unfortunately he has been switched off. The System!!! There is a lots behind it.
Unfortunately, It is been always in such a way that one has to suffer so that thereby the other must not. A Human nature?

Supermarkets in UK use promotions to tempt people to buy more than they NEED.
Also when you shop WEEKLY it is difficult to gauge what you are actually going to need.
The European way of shopping more frequently but for less is less wasteful of food.
I do a weekly shop for basics and then I use my local shop to top up day to day with what I need.
I still do waste food and when I think about the struggle for food in the rest of the world it makes me feel very guilty.

this is similar to the africans way, that is going to the market everyday just to buy food for today.

but the other side is the lack of food security?

Kaanibaa I totally agree with your points ive pasted a posting left on the GTS forum now this is what I can only define as criminal...

help me out here , gordon has told us about not wasting our food. i am a farmer , organic certified , i throw away boxes of good food every week because my courgettes are 22 cm's not 21 or things bolt or my beans grow curly and not straight.
i work from 5 am until 9 pm theres not much else i can do.
is there any way i can feed people with this food. veg is so high in africa most families cant afford it. like i say theres not much i can do, maybe help load a lorry or meet someone on my day off, but i cant understand why i throw away good food with people hungry .
gambia experience are you there.
if you are hungry a curly bean tastes great, but we wont eat them because they dont fit in the right box.

Yeah Princess I found myself peeping into my fridge and found out that I most do exactly what others do ,dump the purchased items that we failed to consume before their expiry dates. This is wastage but perhaps it cannot be helped.Perhaps buying just what we need is a solution but then there is the nine to five rota to keep which means that at times one has to do shopping for items in bulk and keep to avoid coming home and finding an empty fridge . It is always a big issue for me when I throw food away knowing there are others out there some where dying of hunger.A big problem indeed.

kaanibaa as crazy as it sounds the fear of the credit crunch is actually benefiting me.

I now actually take notice of what i'm throwing in my trolley and what exactly is in the cupboards at home my shopping bills are down by a whooping 25%!!!!! and the wastage now is minimal maybe some good has come out of it.

Each time my friend throws away excess or out of date food she puts the equivalent amount into her 'Gambia tin' - then takes the money over & buys essentials for a compound.

Before the 'Gambia tin' the same lady stopped smoking after working out that for the price of one & half cigarettes per day she would be able to pay the fees for two junior school children.
This is now her third year of paying fees.
