72 Million Children Out Of School Globally Says EFAnet Chairperson
By Isatou Bittaye
“About 72 million children are out of school globally” said Mrs. Adelaide Sosseh, chairperson of EFAnet. Mrs. Sosseh made this statement on Friday, at a press briefing organised by Education for All Campaign Network (EFAnet) .The press conference is part of activities aimed at marking the Global Week of Action. She added that in year 2000, world leaders met in Dakar, where they set six education goals to be achieved in 2015. She said in 2000, over 120 million children were out of school, but since the campaign started in 2000 and EFAnet continues pressurizing governments to provide access for education to all, the rate has dropped to 72 million as at 2007. Mrs. Sosseh noted that about 774 million adults are currently without education, noting that girls, disabled children and those living in areas of conflict are most at risk of missing out on education. The Global Campaign for Education thinks this is not fair .Itis a coalition which promotes education for all children and adults everywhere. The coalition pressurizes governments and the international community to take immediate action to deliver on their promise of quality, free and compulsory education to everyone. Mrs. Sosseh noted that the target for Education For All to be achieved is 2015, but according to all indicators, an additional 12 year is the mid-year for the goals to be achieved in 2015, but there are still many adults without non-formal education globally. Mrs. Sosseh said education provides people with competences and skills .She called on the government to make education accessible to all. She said EFAnet implores the Department of State for Basic and Secondary Schools to include early childhood development and adult non-formal education in their program.
