Global Week of Action Kicks Off Today By Isatou Bittaye
The Global Week of Action 2008 started today, 21st April, and that in The Gambia, the event is being organized by the Education for All Campaign Network (EFANet). The week is intended to unite millions of children, teachers, parents and campaigners across the globe, in their attempt to break the world record, and ensure that everyone has education. As part of preparations for the celebration, the EFANet, on Friday, organized a press conference to share with the public the messages about the Global Week of Action through the media. In giving the opening remarks, the coordinator of EFANet, Mr. Matarr Baldeh, said the reason for the press briefing is to convey the message of Global Week of Action to the Gambian populace. Mr. Baldeh added that it is part of their preparation, planning and implementation of a successful global week of action. He said EFANet is grateful to the media, as part of their participation in the GWA Campaign and all their partners who are working for achieving education for all.
The Chairperson of Advocacy and Fundraising Committee, Mrs Yatta Sey Corr, said the committees are set to correct their mistakes of 2007. She added that the Advocacy Committee has invited various producers to submit their profomas for evaluation which they have done. Mrs. Sey Corr also noted that the fundraising committee has been working hard in order to secure funds for the celebration but through their collaboration with last year’s partners they were able to secure funds for the event.
The Chairperson of the Media Committee, Lamin Njie, also spoke of the activities they have been engaged in. He said the committee went on a round tour with Media houses and discussed with Editors about the GWA in order to get coverage and advertisement. He added that panel discussions have been held on the Television and Radio and a lot have been done and they will continue their work during the week.
The Chairperson of EFANet, Mrs. Adelaide Sosseh, said education is the business of everybody and the media are playing their part in education. Mrs. Sosseh said EFANet consists of partner organisations and regional bodies of which the Gambia’s main body is ANCEFA. She said this year’s theme is “end exclusion now.” Mrs. Sosseh also called on the private sector to take their corporate responsibility and support EFANet in the campaign for Education for All, noting that in doing so, the private sector would be contributing to the development of the Gambia.
The celebrations will include, among others, teaching the biggest lesson and highlight of the lesson is to take place on 23rd April, in Bwiam.
