jambo, thank you for the timely reminder. Yes, Holy Week is a special week for Christians. The Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ are celebrated on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. all Christians are encouraged to celebrate these events and attend the ceremonies in their churches. One of the high lights is the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, which is a day of fast and abstinence for Christians. The mid-night Mass on holy Saturday is the culmination of our triduum of Prayer.

Satafara, Good Friday is called 'good' because it is the day that commemorated Jesus dying on the Cross to save us.
The Easter egg is a symbol for Easter and the Resurrection...........The chicken comes from the egg...Jesus came out of the tomb after three days...known as the Resurrection.

Kobo, I would like to correct you if you dont mind. It is true that Maulud Nabi/Malid An-Naabiyy [all Arabic] celebrates the birth of the prophet, and 'Gamo' [a Senegambian tradition] also marks the birth of the prophet, however, the word 'Gamo' is a borrowed word from the ancient serere divination festival - the purpose of which was to predict the course of the winter months. It has nothing to do with Islam, it is an ancient serere pegan festival long before islam. It takes its name from the old serere word 'Gama-hou' a rough transtalation is 'to find the lost heart'. The medievel King Guedopal Joof of Sine was well known for his celebration of the Gamo, he would summond his high priests and priestesses to prepare for the festival. Every winter year, they would use the moon to predict when the festival should start [serere cosmology]. After the anual festival, the king makes his public announcement to his people, at the end of the announcement, he will say 'i will now go and eat with Roog and I suggest you and your family go and do the same' hence the serere proverb 'Guedo nyam fo Roog' - 'Guedo is going to eat with Roog' [Roog is the supreme God of the Sereres]. Another borrowed word from the ancient serere pegans is "Tobaski'. It too had nothing to do with islam. It is an ancient serere hunting festival - long before islam or christianity. It is a borrowed word by the senegambian muslims - the Arabic word is Eid Al Kabir/Eidul Adha. After the Senegambians people converted to islam in their masses, they borrowed the name of these ancient pegan festivals. To the pegan sereres I wish them happy Gamo, to the Muslims I wish them happy maulud nabi and to the christians I wish them happy easter.

Tamsier

Serere heritage. Serere religion. Serere to the end.

Roog a fa ha.

tamsier, thank you for that information, i do think you should write a book or get a website. it is this kind of information that gets lost either in translation or is forgotten.
Happy Easter.
