Mid-night love:
A short love story

By Yero Jallow

At mid-night the house lights has gone off. Clear lights turned to dark blue and dark red while the music gives a slow beat. Doors and windows all locked tight and the air conditioners fanning refreshing breeze. If for any noise was just the one coming from hush voices, gossiping themselves alone in the mighty room. Yama-saff has worn that light sleeper dress while Moi-gorr too had the golden pajama. The deep conversation has begun about the number of children, the houses to buy, the cars, et cetera. The kind of conversation that reduced hours to nanoseconds while curdled in a warming blanket and the hands of a loved one, scratching the itching spots on the back and braiding the rough hairs in return. You can’t die at that moment. Death is postponed till later because death only comes with hopelessness, not when one exhales Carbon dioxide and another inhale it, as the gods of nature dictated.

Yama-saff: “Moi, scratch my back. It is itching me.”
Moi-gorr: “Where?”
Yama-saff: “On the center of my back, right there.”
Moi-gorr: “It’s a little bump. “
Yama-saff: “Burst it! Squeeze it!”
Moi-gorr: “It’s not ripe yet. It will hurt painfully bad.”
Yama-saff: “I see.”

Moi-gorr: “Yama, I had a long day. Crack my fingers to reduce the fatigue for me.”
Yama-Saff: “Which finger do I start with?”
Moi-gorr: “Pointer-finger. Massage my neck and back also.”

So on and on with the game of mid-night love
These couples curdled well and sang the love song
“I love you sweetie" in whisper.
Offering one and another the heavenly earth
Inhaling each other’s carbon dioxide
Instead of the regular oxygen.

Sleep has spread his mask
And the echoes of “groans”
Resembling the lion in the café
And the other’s cat’s sleep
Breathing slowly but steadily.

Come at cock-crow during dawn
The night’s thoughts were all day-dreams
That quickly packed and left on a journey
And to show up again at Mid-night
That’s mid-night love.

Author’s note: The poem is dedicated to all couples and aspiring couples.

"There is no god but Allah (SWT); and Muhammad (SAW)is His last messenger." shahadah. Fear & Worship Allah (SWT) Alone! (:
