Sunday’s Love

In the garden of love
Visible floral whorls in millions
Beautiful and colorful flowers
Scenting the neighborhood

With tranquil of love and hope
During sunny and rainy days
All swaying left to the right
Back and forward, swaying
With the breeze of gentile winds, swaying
Bees and flies feeding on floral nectar

Birds singing their melodious songs
Humans gossiping the flowers
In jealousy of the nectar insects
Pointing fingers to the floral whorls
For a pick of a beautiful ‘lily’ flower
In love and admiration.

Do You Love Me?

A lover asked his beloved,
Do you love yourself more
than you love me?

The beloved replied,
I have died to myself
and I live for you.

I’ve disappeared from myself
and my attributes.
I am present only for you.

I have forgotten all my learning,
but from knowing you
I have become a scholar.

I have lost all my strength,
but from your power
I am able.

If I love myself
I love you.
If I love you
I love myself.

p.s. Most love poems of rumi are love of allah.

A loving heart...

Dear friends, listen to me now,

Love's like the shining sun,

A heart without love

Is nothing more than a stone.

What rises up in a stony heart?

No matter how softly it begins,

The tongue's soft words

Soon turn to war when poison spews.

A loving heart burns and burns,

Then it melts like wax in the flame,

But a heart that is hard as stone

Is like winter, dark and mean and cold.

In the service of this Sultan,

In the presence of this Lord of might,

The star of all lovers shines

Like a faithful, royal servant.

Now Yunus, let your fears vanish

While flowering illusions of this world fade,

A true man first needs love, and from

Then on he is no different from a dervish.

Are you a true lover?

If you don't sacrifice your soul

On the path of love,

Are you a true lover?

If you don't press hard

For union with the Friend,

Are you a true lover?

If you don't strengthen

Your love for the Friend,

Forgetting all desire and attachment,

Are you a true lover?

Love needs no witness,

Not every soul rises up to heaven,

If you don't burn

In love's fire like a moth,

Are you a true lover?

If you don't give up those desires

Of the self and you don't

Drink from the cup of love,

If you have no determination

On the path to the Friend,

Are you a true lover?

If you don't worship by day

And by night, devoting yourself to God,

If you don't remember God in a crowd,

Are you a true lover?

Now Yunus, be patient

In your suffering for this Friend,

If your heart is not pierced

By the arrow of love,

Are you a true lover?

YUNUS

She said she loves me
And i believed her
Walking down the lane
holding hands and oblivious of the surrounding mess
We two lovers in a garden of roses
Not even the thorns striking at our arms got our notice
Then out of the blue
we got a tiff
None budging our stance
All I can now see in her eyes which once
Radiated love
Now exude immense hatred
Who then can tell the difference between love and hatred
I for one do not know
All that i know is that one who loves can also hate
And the question is where then goes the big mighty love

to be alone with you.....

Beloved, the arrow of Your love

Can actually go through stone,

We who are captured by Your love

Lose both mind and soul.

We shed tears by day and by night

As we get to know Your love,

When we worry about You alone,

All our fears and troubles drop away.

May the hearts that fall

Into Your love just burn and burn,

We deliver ourself to You,

And abandon everything else but You.

Worldly love is merely

A deadly kind of food,

When we see the end with wisdom,

We turn down that poisonous food.

If our mind is truly sound,

We don't do our duty for wages,

We are not enslaved by houris,

We ignore them when they turn their face to us.

The true lover dashes off to give

His mind and his soul to the Beloved,

He offers his life a thousand times

For union with the Friend.

For all those who are wise, this world

Is nothing but a dream or a picture,

And when we surrender ourself to You,

We forget about this dream.

The heart and eyes of Yunus

Are filled with love of Haqq,

With love of our God alone,

He forgets all his friends,

Because he wants to be alone with Haqq.

to be lover.....

Whoever claims to be a lover

Does not think of passion or desires,

Whoever comes to the house of love

Has no interest in anything, no attachment to anything.

Whoever is a true lover no longer

Remembers this world and the hereafter,

Whoever expects titles and struts

With arrogance is not a true lover.

Arrogance and honor belong

To love of this world,

Whoever loves the titles of the world

Never talks about love.

Whoever talks about love with his tongue alone,

Does not know what love is,

So here is my explanation,

Love is exalted in a priceless way.

It is slanderous to call someone a lover

Who does not renounce love of the world,

Love does not come to an inner heart

Filled with arrogance and love of the world.

Love does not accept arrogance

Or love of the world:

These are not my words, love itself

Does not find them correct.

Let those whose hearts taste love

Forget about everything except love,

No other vehicle but love

Will reach the presence of the Friend.

Let those who are true lovers

Walk the path with love,

Whoever uses the eye of the inner heart

Never stumbles into traps along the way.

Let those who call Yunus a lover

Be careful, do not imitate him,

Many will be lost because

Our destination is far away.

For Yunus Emre, poetry was a way to express true sentiments and ideas, his poems were realistic and instructional. His interest was not art for art's sake, yet he addressed his audience, which involved every member of society from ordinary, illiterate individuals to highly educated people, with a high level of poetic excellence. He never composed poems for a specific group or for his own reputation.

His poetry gives no weight to the separations of religion, sect, race, color or status. He never discriminates among human beings, his embracing attitude welcomes all humanity without any sense of differences; he does not separate, he reconciles and unites people in his humanism. His poetry describes Sufism with a detailed simplicity which allows it to spread across and penetrate all areas of society.

In one of his poems he gives us a remarkable description of himself.

Who asks what I am, listen, and understand my song:

Water, earth, fire and wind are my body,

Four walls composed by the elements in conflict,

This is a miracle, a gift of His command.

Wind and earth come together in air,

Fire finds its peace in water,

Destiny, life and death are then bestowed,

And the six directions created.

Let no one tell me about my soul, this is

Controlled by the One who gives me life,

And let my senses be open wide: always recognizing

His existence everywhere is the greatest good.

Our mind does not give us today's news, if we

Think about it, our mind dwells on yesterday's news,

Perception and reason will not go beyond this point where,

From there on, my world has died in this world.

O Yunus, how strange, you have so much here, with

The inner heart the place of my Love, with my tongue to witness this.

We can say the dertli, the one who sorrows, the gharib, the one who is hidden, alone and other, and the ashik, the one who loves, describe the remarkable vision and life of Yunus Emre.

Dertli Yunus, The Sorrowful Yunus

The root of Yunus' sorrows stems from his intense awareness that life is a heavy burden, something he had observed closely in his youth as he studied the world around him, traveling through villages, towns and countries. His travels gave him an opportunity to survey and assess accurately the things he saw happening in life, from a higher perception this awareness gave him. He found simple solutions for the problems affecting people's lives, for the things which made them sorrow, and the answers he found for a sorrowing people, in the context of this higher awareness, are specifically reflected in his poetry.

First, Yunus tried to understand why people were subject to sorrow, then he examined and explored, in detail, the actual effects of this sorrow on people's lives. What he noticed from his close observations was that most of the sorrows of life are valuable, even a benefit because they somehow help us become more mature, they help us to perfect ourselves in this world. He realized how different those who sorrow are from other people, and from this he took the essential truth that there is a remedy hidden in man's sorrow. When those who sorrow begin to reflect on the nature of sorrow they try to find a remedy for themselves, through the search itself they discover the meaning, the truth of life in this world. Only then are they in a position to help others who also grieve, by showing them the fruitful outcome of their own sorrow, by keeping them from falling into the deep grief which destroys both life and hope. Just as the medicine we take to recover from an illness is a remedy, our sorrow in this world is also the remedy for a disease. When we taste certain medicines for the first time they are bitter indeed, nevertheless, they are effective cures for our illnesses. And this is the reason why so many of Yunus Emre's poems are remedies prescribed for all humanity.

My brothers and sisters in sorrow, do you weep and moan with sorrow, a sorrow which urgently begs you to look for a remedy? You might be able to find a treatment for some of your sorrows, doctors might help you with others, but you should remember there are certain sorrows you will never find a remedy for no matter how exhaustive your search for help. At such times you must stop to think seriously and remember, please, there is the One who created you, the One who created everything from nothing. As soon as He is ready, His will can remove your sorrow in an instant. Pay attention to this, never say that I pray and pray to Him, but my prayers have not been accepted yet, my desire has not been fulfilled yet. He knows better than you do precisely the time to help, He knows why a particular thing will be a benefit for you. Submerge yourself in Him and seek refuge from your sorrows saying, “ Ya Rabb, O Lord, my remedy is You, my destiny is You.” Once you say this you forget all the sorrow that causes grief in your life, you find yourself busy with a search for Haqq, for God, and your only sorrow is the search for Him, your only intention is to merge with Him. If you become such a person, you see nothing but Him, all your sorrow disappears when patience is strengthened by certitude.

What is causing your grief, do you have some illness, and are you sick? First, try every possible way to find a remedy for the sickness, go to a doctor, and ask him to help you find a cure. When you have taken every possible medicine, any treatment your doctor advises, and then it is your duty to pray to God, the all-powerful, that you benefit from the treatment. But if you have some illness that no medicine can cure, that no doctor can find a treatment for, never lose hope, you must continue to pray until the end of your life. Ask Him to give you sabur, inner patience, and a cure; meanwhile, search for the meaning of birth and death, try to realize this secret, what it means to die before death, and your days will pass quickly, your pain will be relieved. The wine of vuslat, your union with the Beloved One, the Sevgili, will relieve your pain. This is a state in which you understand the remedy for your sorrow is union with God: cauterize your wounds with the fire of love and they will not make you suffer any longer. My brothers and sisters, may God relieve your pain and fulfill your intentions.

Are you sorrowful because you lost someone you knew well, has someone in your family died? Possibly you did not understand something important before you lost this person, one day we all die, you have to accept that, one day you will also die. Death does not mean we become nothing. Our body which takes its nourishment from the earth goes back to the very earth that nourishes it, merging with earth, but the ruh, the soul is not material, it is not composed of the elements, our soul is never consumed by the earth and it never disappears. When death comes to us, our soul is only undressed by the body, allowing it to find its true identity. What dies is our body, the soul never dies, never vanishes, it only moves on to another realm where it continues to exist. There is no reason to describe a person who has passed away as dead, they still see you.

You should accept this truth and understand that simple explanation without troubling your mind. If you do, from then on you will look at life from the perspective of death. Unless you do, you can't conceive there will be a day when you have to leave the world, because you have been looking at life from the perspective of immortality. This truth you are a little late realizing will shock you, but you will only come to an awareness of what life in this world means by seeing it. If you don't, one day the truth of death itself will slowly overtake you as you also move on to another realm. You should know that the time of death is the most difficult time of your life, a time when you find yourself burning in the fires of complete regret and disappointment. Yet if you accept these truths, if you understand what it means to be insan, to be a true human being before death comes, then you know both worlds, the dünya, this world, and akhira, the hereafter. In this state nothing can destroy your peace or shatter your happiness, you realize eternal happiness. It is my hope that the death of a beloved friend or a dear relative will be the cause of your own rebirth.

Is it that you have marriage problems, that you don't get along with your husband, your wife, is this person mistreating you? So far you have used patience to put up with this bad treatment, now you must surround yourself with the Creator, and ask for His patience. Pray that God will help your husband or wife see what is good, and seeing the truth, he or she will change. Try to examine yourself critically as well, try to understand whether you are at fault in these relations; if you have faults try to correct them, to change yourself. Do this and seek refuge in God, ask Him to change your husband, your wife. Endure your difficulties with utmost patience to maintain the unity and oneness of the family. As Hadrat Ibrahim Hakki of Erzurum, one of the great Sufis of Anatolia observes, “Let us see what God can do, whatever He does is beautiful.”

Is loneliness the cause of your sorrow, you don't have friends? You must know when God makes someone lonely, He wants that person to be His friend. Think about this and stop worrying, the best friend of those who are lonely is the Lord who created them. Does that One who created you ever leave? His love and His friendship are all you need to know; only when you turn your face to Him will you know the true Friend.

Do you have debts you can't repay? God, the all-powerful, is Himself the guarantor of debts and rizq , of nourishment. First, try hard to pay back what you owe, remember to pray for God's help to do this easily. Whatever the situation you find yourself in, you will never be mistaken, you will never be wrong to pay what you owe. Surround yourself with God. If you have some difficulty in repaying the debt, simply go to the person you owe the money to and explain your situation openly, then together find a way to pay it back. As far as it is possible, do not break your promise, but if you have difficulty again, inform the person you are indebted to with sincerity.

Do you have enemies, do you think you are in danger? Never say anything about the person you believe is hostile to you, especially if you are with people who know that person. Say only that you feel uncomfortable because of this antagonism, but that you do not think badly of him or her. Remember to surround yourself with God, ask Him to protect you from the trouble coming from your opponent, ask God for His help, try to be reconciled with this person. Do not let your arrogance or your nafs, your baser self, deceive you.

Are you poor, without food? Remember that God, the all-powerful, told His Prophet He would manifest within the poor, that He could be visited among the poor, and for that reason keep visiting the poor, the starving. With this awareness and with great hope, wait for the rahmat, the divine grace that comes from God, but try hard to earn your living too.

Come my sorrowful brothers and sisters, do not search for joy in this world, do not long for joyful times, do not feel depressed or hopeless in sorrow. Know with certitude that your sorrow is your remedy.

Gharib Yunus, Strange, Sorrowing Yunus

Yunus was finally plunged deep into an immense whirlpool, the loneliness of sorrow caused by the separation from Haqq, from God. He became a stranger of Haqq suffering from loneliness even in a crowd.

Sorrowing deeply,

He crosses over mountains,

Alone in a crowd,

He runs to Haqq with love.

Yunus traveled through towns, climbed mountains and walked across the steppes, but he did not find anyone like himself, weeping and moaning because of the longing in his heart. The fire of this yearning for the Beloved burned him by day and by night, although his words spoke only of love, tears of love flowing from his eyes, and still he was unable to find his Beloved. He came to this world as a being separated from his Beloved, weary of the suffering and sorrow of the world. Yunus wanted to return to his Dost, his true Friend, God, by breaking the chains of the world tying his feet. Even if he had been born a hundred thousand times, he would still have wanted to offer his life on the path to his true Friend. What is underlined in his poems is that he had come to a strange place where no one actually understood him, where he himself was the only one who heard what he was saying because other people could not understand the truth he revealed. Yunus called himself a nightingale in his Beloved's garden, and his Beloved a never-fading rose. He tells us his Beloved summoned him, sent him a cup of love's wine which he drank until he realized the secret of eternal life.

Like Yunus, there are hidden beings living with their otherness among people (gharib). They also become magnets for the sorrows of others, always yearning for Haqq until the last moment of their lives. When they share their sorrow and become friends of the lonely, they taste the joy of nearness to Haqq. Haqq is their friend and they are the friends of the ghariban, the estranged and lonely ones in the crowd. The ghariban or alienated ones are those who cannot confide their sorrows to anyone; they are also lonely among people. The gharib, on the other hand, are those who are separated from Haqq. They are the hidden beings living in their otherness among people. Their only yearning in this world is their Beloved, God. Unlike the ghariban, the estranged and lonely ones, the gharib are only distant from Haqq, but is there anyone who will know the sorrow and loneliness of the ghariban better than the gharib who are constantly on fire in their yearning for Haqq? Who will introduce the most faithful Friend to the ghariban, who will rub the powerful ointment of love and friendship on their wounds?

Brothers and sisters of my heart, are you lonely too, do you feel alone at times, do you think no one understands you? Do you have that strong sense of loneliness within yourself, receive nothing in return even though you care for people and help them, find intolerance in others even though you always show tolerance and understanding to them? Are you alone, my brothers and sisters, alone in a crowd, do you have a sorrow which you cannot confide to anyone? Remember there is no friend but Haqq and intimate friends of Haqq. You must be filled with hope; so look away, throw all your sorrows into the ocean of Haqq. You cannot find a remedy for your sorrow except in the Lord who created you.

Some people become addicted to alcohol trying to deal with their loneliness, expecting that intoxication will help them forget. It is true you forget your loneliness for a time, but you sow the seeds of other ruinous mistakes, problems you will reap later on when you burn on the hearth of nightmares and other more serious difficulties. In the end, you kill yourself, dying by your own hand, destroying your own life.

My brothers and sisters who are captivate and intoxicated by alcohol and drugs, please do not be angry with me when I raise this issue, when I speak unkindly of something you love. You have taken a filthy lover who will be the source of every evil. While you still have the chance, if it's not too late, please leave this lover, never submit to its disgusting embrace again. If you really enjoy being drunk and intoxicated, look for someone who will love you faithfully, find someone who loves you so much you lose yourself in the intoxication of His love, you are filled with respect for His love. Believe that when you taste this kind of drunkenness, you will never drink alcohol again. Salams, greetings of peace to those in love, to those who fall in love with the faithful Beloved, salams to those who are intoxicated, enchanted with longing for the Beloved, salams to those who have forgotten all their sorrow when they drink the wine of love.

Let us be friends of the ghariban , those who are estranged and lonely, let us love and make life easy for ourselves, no one should live for this world. Let us help the blind across the street, be merciful to the elderly and help the poor, let us share the sorrows of those who sorrow. May we ask our Beloved for His compassion, His mercy and realize the true, secret meaning of being strange, of being other. May we be a faithful friend with a heart equal to the heart of Yunus.

Ashik Yunus, Yunus the Lover

On the path to becoming an insan kamil, a perfected human being, the most important concept which Sufism accepts is the concept of divine love, of ilahi ashk, man's unceasing love of God. Even Yunus could not completely describe this love in his poems, this divine love which plays such an important role in Sufism as well as in the poetry and remarkable character of Yunus. For the great Sufis, the divine love exemplified in Yunus' extraordinary character is rooted in the understanding that it is the Creator offering Himself to Himself. It is the love between the lover, the ashik, and the Beloved, the Mashuk, the Sevgili, through which He witnesses the exaltedness of His beautiful names, His asma' and His attributes, His sifat.

Yunus loved hills, mountains, stones, trees and birds, he loved the inner soul of souls, the canlarin cani. When he could not tolerate this yearning any longer, he traveled in search of his Beloved, asking for news of Him from little ants walking on the earth, from the birds flying in the sky. He asked those who sorrowed for news of the Beloved, he asked the poor, but he found nothing. This love burned him, it scorched him all through his life until at last, he found the inner soul of souls, then he threw his ashes into the divine ocean.
