I am sorry that Parrot had such a poor experience of arriving in The Gambia and the staff at the airport I have revisited The Gambia many times and although I admit that all the things he complains of did used to happen things have changed recently,I have never been asked for money to have my passport stamped, but in the past it was suggested to me that I should pay duty for an old mobile phone that I had brought with me ,I was calm and told the customs officer that this second mobile phone was a back up as I had heard that mobile phones were often the target for thieves, the officer accepted this explaination and was very polite stating that it was their job to collect taxes for imported items,no problem there. It is true that there is always some hassling for arriving passengers amongst the porters who are obviously in competition to carry passengers bags, let's be real about this money is hard to come by in Gambia.
The road situation however is all about politics, what government wants arriving VIPs to travel on poor roads from the airport and to see the reality that Gambia is still a developing country? it happens all over the world, yes, even here in America there are slums and bad roads. The fact remains though that NEW roads have been built recently, even though those roads are often used for the comfort of VIPs.I am stating things that I have experienced only and hold no brief for any political party or person. This topic could develop into a very interesting mirror on how visitors to the Gambia percieve the country now.Lets have some more posts.!!!

Bev, have no worries they way things change in gambia, who reads this today could be replaced tomorrow.
MADIBA, what a sentence I have to agree "if the opposition got their house in order", you would think it would be easy but they have made every excuse going. I wonder if they are not on the payroll of their opponents.
