March 21, 2006

The coup d'etat that was staged against president Yahya Jammeh of The Gambia on March 21, 2006 was headed by key senior army officers. The main reason for their action was their dissatisfaction with the president's leadership, lack of payment of their salaries or sometimes lateness in payment thereof, dilapidated army facilities and living conditions, and the economic hardship that Gambians live under. According to our source, the plan was to siege the capital city, Banjul and attach the State House (the presidential residence) while president Jammeh was away on an official business in Mauritania. Our source went further to say, "The plan was leaked out probably by the rank and file army officers. If the plan was not leaked out, their attack would have succeeded because of their level of education, peacekeeping mission experience around the world, and their determination to succeed."

The leaders of this coup are considered the main stay of The Gambian military. All but one (Chief of Staff, Ndure Cham) are under military custody at the Mile 2 central prison near Banjul. Our source concluded that it will take a long time to replace the captured officers in the military because they are the most educated and high-ranking officers.

The officers are:

Chief of Staff, Ndure Cham
Former Navy Commander, M. B. Sarr
Former Chief of Staff, Vincent Jatta
Captain Seckan
Captain Jah
Captain Bunja Darboe
Captain Yaya Darboe
Captain Wassa Camara
Lieutenant Savage
Major Bah
Regimental Sergeant Major Bah
Captain Alieu Bah
In our next posting we will reveal who leaked out the coup plot, the reaction of president Jammeh, and the current situation within The Gambia military.

I hope and pray for a peaceful removal of jammeh. The soldiers are right. There is absolute hardship in the Gambia. What does jammeh think? The very people he is insulting, maltreating, hireing and firing etc are relatives of members of the armed forces.

He should realise that these people are human beings like himself who are bound to feel let down and frustrated if their relatives are subjected to what he is subjecting them . They want an excellent standard of living for their relatives like he is providing in Kanilai. He must be sure people will be planning to take his head out all the time. Some day they will secceed, no doubt. INSHA ALLAH, OUR PRAYERS ARE ALREADY ACCEPTED. THE RESULT WILL FOLLOW AND ALL WILL BE PEACEFUL.

It looks like there are other arrests of civilians. Some one posted Ramzia Diab. I am not sure if we will know all.

Roll the music DJ. To be arrested for not knowing about it is to be punished for not being vigilant and a loyal servant of Junkung. Just like Edi Amin said " People MUST love their leaders".

Is possible that there was a coup attempt. But i still have my doubts. It seems to me that the president is learning a lot of things. He seems to be a changed person because of the developments in the sub-region.

He learned a lot from Obasanjo( nigerian president). This so called coup might be a plan to show to the whole world that he is decent person who is more interested in the welfare of his citizens instead of what others had portrayed him.I think the coup affair is a construction in other to win the minds of the international community.

Because if he can arrest all these people and force them to confess of their actions, and give them some sort of amnesty then the whole world will see him in a different way-especially the whole of the sub region and that of international observers are warming towards the AU summit in the gambia.

I think, he will let them go finally so that he can be crowned as one of the presidents in the whole of Africa who is adhered to the principles of human rights and leniency even if his life is at stake.

Lets wait and see but i know this man is not the same stupid yaya we used to know. He thinks a lot about his retirement and how to enjoy his riches.

Just being little bit critical.

Noble causes and taking risks requires some sacrifices. However betrayal ("Jamfaa") has been a common phenomena affecting Gamabians. Jammeh played a dangerous game of chess to be there and as I said earlier if things does not go well for others within his ranks its a noble cause to take the bull by its horns. No cowards please because we are all patriots to sort it out. Long live Gamabia.

Of course there require annesty as they are all gallant soldiers with noble causes like him. Let him open his eyes and benefit to improve on his leadership style and good governance. He deserved to have good advisers to avoid such level of discontent within the Arm forces and civilians. Gambia "sunu rew la." If you brutalise, there will be brutalise plots for you and one must eventually materialise.

Kobo,
You are right He should give them armnesty and even the Kartong attackers. For in my view, they were only trying to follow his foot steps.
One thing is clear in my view,I don't and will never support coups even if Yaya kills every day.Colllectively we can remove him by a public concensus.

Greetings all, Salimina, personally I believe there was a coup. But in your observations and thoughts you have omitted that The Gambia is to become eligible for the multilateral debt write-off to the World Bank, African Development Bank, and International Monetary Fund once they have met good governance criteria. This must be due in around nine months time, for whatever it may be worth to the ordinary man/woman on the ground in The Gambia. This would need a conscientious programme of events to the world! When you take a look at the debt to be dropped in this second round you will see many of these countries have recently or are about to have elections, ‘good governance’ ummm we will see! Does a leopard change its spots?

Freedom & peace..

We welcome that trend if thre are proper democratic structures in place for genuine democracy, freedom and justice. However terror breeds terror and a Head of State should promote democracy, accountability, transparency, uphold the rule of law and the constitution, left the civil service and municipal councils to be effective and not mobilised for evry ruling party's agenda but for the general good of every taxpayer.
