Definitely Gambia really need more Doctors, nurses and staff in the Health Sector. Its really a good achievement and on a positive note credit goes to current government that inherited the feasibility studies and succeded on implementation of UTG.

There are many benefits of UTG and excellence consistently reported since established.

Madiba,

That's a good thing. hopefully, someday, a president's wife don't have to be flown to the US for baby delivery.

I heard the medical bills for the President's wife are nation-damaging. The amount quoted look accurate, as far as one can tell of someone without medical insurance in America, less if there was any help from the US Gov't or other individuals.

The 'diplomatic immunity status'/visa waiver won't permit such children to have US citizenship on the basis of -"citizenship by birth." I lost track of how Jammeh's battle ended with the US embassy in Banjul, "In The Matter of Mariama Jammeh Vs. US Homeland Security."

Does any one know?

Give credit where it is due. Jammeh and his APRC on the governance, i.e. human rights, local gov'ts etc are not doing well to say the least. On press freedom too bad to put it mildly.

However, his efforts in the health , communication, infrastructure are commendable.

Dalton1 may we see the day when not only the President, or the rich of The Gambia or even the 'connected' send their spouses to deliver in the US, soonest. The sum the president is reported to have spent is to be verified. If, a big if for that matter, Jammeh dug into gov't coffers to send his wife to deliver in the US, who do you blame? Jammeh or the NAMs or better still the electorates.

I could have sent my wife to deliver in the US NOT to acquire a Yankee citizenship(i dnt need it), but probably if i fear for her or my baby's live in the hands of the current medical staff of the gambia. The situation is not Jammeh's making. many gambian trained or sponsored doctors/ surgeons/nurses left for the US, UK and others started leaving even well before 1994. So it is a lack of patriotism on the part of Gambians. Many trained nurses sent on training here in the UK absconded after their trainig, on the influence by friends who are living here trapped without qualification and illegically resident. If i tell some people that after completion of my studies am going back. Some will stare at me, and say to where? I reply home-The Gambia. Some think am mad. Am not. La Patrie ou La Mort(the country or death)

Until Gambian Doctors/Surgeons/nurses reciprocate the sacrifce of the gambian taxpayers to educate them, stay to contribute to national development, the President (not Jammeh per se), the rich and the connected will continue to seek medical attention elsewhere.

I feel sad when certain people think it is the best thing that can happen to you, if you or ur children acquire US citizen. Unless one is genuinely persecuted in The Gambia, one seeks asylum and is granted and consequently he becomes a US or UK citizen, any other way is criminal to say the least.

Madiba,

A lot of sense in that posting of yours. I heard that before- that some nurses left and are not going back. They are searching for greener pastures outside.

However, i tend to disagree with your assertion that Jammeh cannot be blamed for his deeds. Isn't he the same one curing HIV AIDS??? something no one else is curing. Jammeh as the 'MMB' or criminal ruler is supposed to set an example of being proud of the Gambia.

I agree with you on the criminal indulgement-and yaya jammeh was battling his case for his child at the US embassy. The threatened to take it further to USCIS but i lost a track of the outcome. Now what can you and I derrive from that?

On the NAMS, they are equally a mesh. They are bunch of salary collectors. (you know what i mean.)

If at all $100,000.00 is a correct amount as quoted by some online commentators, let us do some math here.

$100,000.00xD20.00=D2,000000.00
($1.00 =D20.00)

Now the question how did jammeh acquire that much money?

Dalton1 thanks for keeping the debate alive. Yes, i think i should have clarified my statement. What i should have said was that Jammeh is not ENTIRELY responsible for the status quo, BUT we Gambians too have our share of the problem, esp trained doctors and nurses frm taxpayers monies. They keep on evaporating as soon as they graduate. Is that fair? NO wonder the erudite Ghanaian Professor was qwik in reminding them.

Jammeh fighting for baby Mariam to have Yankee citizenship is news to me. I dnt think the pride in Jammeh will let him stoop so low. Even a common Gambian like me, won't beg the Yankees.

This is a commendable achievement for our smallest land in Africa,Gambia. We salute the visions and commitment of those who piloted such projects. We hope they will further their studies at Masters level, let The Gambia have specialists as well.I hope the Gambian populace will unite behind these young professionals. We are proud of them.

Madiba & Che,

& i share both of your views. (thanks)

Our medical students deserve a big pat on the back for a mild-stone achievement.

Yes Madis, Jammeh was battling 'tooth and nail' for his baby's US citizenship. May be some reader or contributor here can confirm that.

First, he had to bitterly battle with the US embassy in Banjul. Those people opened for him the booklet about citizenship laws, so he told them he will appeal. I will research the piece and see if i can forward it here.

thanks,
Dalton.

a pay rise for medical staff, doctors, nurses, adminstration teachers etc would help to keep them in the country, but obvisouly the money is going elsewhere
