By Yero Jallow

Gambian Satirist: George Orwell II

The height of George Orwell II
Is the height of the first class icons
Through his mighty gun
Guarding our sovereignty
With one eye close
In the deepest of naps.

A tireless Orwell II of ours
Dribbling with words of wisdom
While a humble and eloquent giant
Penning the history of the pharaohs
To feed generations of times
So they know the gone dark moments.

Note: Rene, I join you in paying a tribute to our brother Baba Galleh Jallow. Certainly, a tireless and selfless fellow, full of energy and love. The poem is also dedicated to all those who share the struggle through their mighty pens, efforts et cetera.

Uncle Suntou,

Thank you. I am a little tight-up, but i acknowledge reading your rejoinder to Galleh's tribute.

Mine is too small a "dot" compared to Galleh who spent two-thirds of his life educating and sharing hiw views. But i appreciate your encouragement.

Since the closure of the "Independent," he never gave up. His pieces are a "must-read" in these media outlets.

In turn, i take this rare opportunity to re-dedicate it to you and the many other true educators in these media outlets.

Note: Welcome back! Thank you for the momentum at the other forum. I am following your feedback, and your direction is worth emulation.

More dua' inshallahu. (fii amanil lah)

With love & regards,
Dalton

This is also my dedication to Baba Galleh. I know him personally for more than 25 years now.

Kons.

thanks alot! I like the dance. "hula beh foni. hula kuh jamatau."-but we are of the foninkas. we are of the Jola tribe. I dedicate the following to you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Upfkqx0_b1g

You are older than the rocks in the outskirts of Yerol-Bawol. You made us believe you a kondorong, but in actual fact, i am seeing a lofty mamapara. If you've known Baba Galleh 25yrs, then how old are you??? But true, you've known a great educator.

The poem is also dedicated to you & the many like you.

I am just 4 feet tall.

Baba has always been interested in the litery world, a great debater in school, but one known to be quite serioius looking. He was very religious too and observed his five daily prayers.

Infact one of the reasons why Baba lost the Head Boy position in his High School was because the students thought him to be too strict and who would enforce the five daily prayers.

The link below is from the Shongai tribe from which the Fulani and Hausa people are believed to have some ancestarl lineages. The sound of the music is typical Fulladu style. Enjoy

Dalton please help translate these fulani words

1. "kossam kecum"
2. "pendidum"

Enjoy these fulani probers

1. Proverb: Heba cofel heba ngoofoondi walaa
Translation: You can't have both a chick and a yolk

2.Bernde feewa teppeere feewa kaa, walaa
You can't have both a cool heart and a cool heel
If you send someone to do something they'll get it wrong and you'll be upset, but if you go yourself you'll get tired

You are a real gainako. I learnt a lot from the late Pa Juta. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

More proverbs.

Mi wadii wootere doobal
I have done the 'one' of the doobal-bird (a bird which lays only one egg)
Said after doing something which you will never do again

Duroowo paabi, kam anndi layooru
The shepherd of frogs recognises the limping one (whereas anyone else would think they are all limping!)
The one who has experience has the accompanying knowledge (i.e. ask the expert)

Alla anndinaay gujjo de bangi munaafiki
God didn't tell the thief he was marrying a gossip
If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have done it. I didn't know that what I was doing was unwise!

Uncle Juta in memory. Just the way you spelt his name tells me you know him well. many spell his name as 'Duta', obviously i guess mandinka pronounciation.

all the same, stay blessed. i hope the limping frogs agree to be under the guidianship of the town shepherds.

thanks,

More proverbs. Enjoy

A blind man's testicles are only stood on once (i.e. he'll move or cry out to stop it happening again!)
Once bitten twice shy - said regarding unpaid loans, bad experiences etc

Si neddo fiyii howru banndum fuu, nyoofa howru mum
He who hits his neighbour's knee curls up his own legs
If you do something bad to someone, they are likely to avenge it, so watch out!

Si mawdo wi'ii modan jammbere ni nannganaa dum leggal
If a man says he will swallow an axe, hold the handle for him
Don't try and talk someone out of something if they've already made up their mind to do it

HAAL PULAAR MA, NA FAY WI HA MAA YI.

Can you translate some of the proverbs for a student like me.

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.”
