Zimbabwe's main opposition party is facing internal strife which could destroy its chances of wrestling power from President Robert Mugabe in next year's elections.

Are you implying that Mr. Tsvangirai's MDC is no opposition

absolutely,boss.
he was the great hope in 2000/2001. they were cheated out of governance and have been systematically ground into the dust by all means - mainly foul.
they have split within and have now been cowed into pretending to converse with the tyrant in a vague attempt to convince south Africa and that toady , mbeki, that they have a role to play. they have no voice,no power, no recognition in reality. their supporters have left them in droves out of despair, hunger and mainly fear.
they cannot win next year, they will not be allowed to win next year.
so, yes. they are irrelevant.
all dictatorships need opposition, but all dictatorships are dictatorships because they brook no opposition. that is how they survive.
is this ringing any bells closer to home?

Yes, their modus operandi is very similar.

BWT, I thought MDC is a strong opposition against Mugabe; at least that’s what we read and see in the media.

Well said Lurker, they were destroyed from within.Irreconcilable spilts of MDC have rendered them toothless. Its even better without them, becoz people continue to be killed,as long as they are purpoted to be opposition supporters.Tsvangirai has broken so many constitutional decisions taken by his NEC.Demonstrating traits of a dictator in opposition, what a let down for peace starved Zimbabweans.Tribalism is also rearing its ugly head in MDC.Its just a mess, with the elections approaching. These splits only serve to divide the little votes needed to oust Mugabe and Zanu pf.Every vote counts in Zim,every one of them. The nation is bleeding like never before.Mugabe is going strong to his party's Extraordinary congress in Dec,they will endorse him outright.Come 2008,he will trounce MDC.Constitutional Amendment 18 allowes parliament to elect his sucessor.Thats what he wanted and MDC fell for it.He knows next year the NA will be filled with Zanu, free or no free elections, thanks to MDC.He can retire(if ever) and still influence the political landscape in the country.
