This piece from the DO shows the way in which Gambian youth MAY be changing, I hope not though.

Great subject. My brother-in-law and some of the youth I know are very focused on education, work and the family and pray 5 times. Despite unemployment, they are still decent good guys. However, especially recently, consumerism, hip-hop-gang culture are destroying youth. I see them more into sneakers, mobile phone, ipod, video game etc. Don't get me wrong it is ok to have those stuff, but when you don't have money for food and you are spending money on these expensive toys, that is wrong. Also, their gang, bling-bling, biatch attitude makes them more hostile, less smart and less sophisticated youth.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

I agree, it is a worldwide problem,a take what you can and never mind about other people, the hurt you do your parents culture in these cases has not anything to do with it,there are bad boys everywhere, the world moves on and this is one of the symptoms of becoming modernised, again sad.

I agree consumerism plays a part, i agree with Turk, some of the youth I know are christian and go to church regular and definately are education focused, but they are still disillusioned by the no job prospect of the future.
If they thought they could get jobs they would be happy, but there is frustration setting in on gambian youth that is not being addressed, it is called NO HOPE, before you all shout, look at Gambia now for an 16-21 year old youth and look at Gambia 15 years ago for the same age group, Consumerism is a small part of the picture.
