I was priviledged to watch the Liberian president address the US Congress. I have for once renewed my faith in the continent. She is a giant and if given the opportunity, she will re-write african history.

I jumped out of my seat and tears flowed down my cheeks. I felt i was missing something. I felt i needed to serve my people more and started asking if i have not betrayed them. I felt empty. This woman can move mountains, highly knowledgeable, came from humble backgrounds and rose to senior positions in the international civil service.

At some point i thought of leaving my job and go back to gambia. the euphoria ended when i changed channels and was watching BBC. That was my flight home from heaven. I saw many dusty west Africans on board makeshift boats heading for fortress europe, weak, sick and being fed by spanish officials and dead bodies of those who drowned making the attempt.

Then my heart ached. the realities begin to set in. Hope disappeared immediately and the angels that i saw were not with me. For a momemnt i thought i was dreaming. One thing that stayed with me was the fact that we are capable of producing fine literate citizens but we have not been able to put them to good use. Liberians are the luckiest on the continent and i hope and pray that they will jealously guard this president because she is committed, selfless, and knows the issues at stake. I hope and pray that another stupid Commander Mosquito does not show his face at the Executive Mansion.

We are sick of war and we need stability. One thousand West African died last year in the sea trying to reach Europe. We may never know the figure. Such images make me feel humiliated. Sometimes we blame the media for showing only the bad part of Africa but in most cases that is the only thing to report.

My jouneey to heaven is short lived but i challenge everyone to make efforts that this journey will only be the beginning and each one of us will have our own moments and many more so that this motherland will be a beacon of hope for mankind.

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.”
