I find it ridiculous that Obasanjo is preaching reconciliation and democracy to Gambian. After all, Nigeria has been under millitary rule much longer than any country in West Africa since Independence in 1960 thanks to Obasanjo and his cohohorts.

He is currently "trying" to change the Nigerian constitution for a third term for the presidency. gamba now no longer has a limit. It is a tale of a pot calling a kettle black.

I do not think Nigeria can teach Gambia any thing about democracy. This is not to say that Gambia cannot learn any lessons from Nigeria's dissastrous democratic record .Nigeria probably spent most of it's post-independent era under tyrannical military juntas in the like of IBB. and Sani Abacha , who flagrantly oppressed the Nigerian citizenry and plundered their economy ("to the detriment of the masses", if I may use Chairman Jammeh's words ; and I am laughing)
At the military takeover in 1994 , the Gambia had one of the longest surviving democracies in Africa ( this is not to justify Sir Dawda's 30 years rule, however).
Nigeria is still mired in corruption, poor governance and sectarian/religious conflict ,although Obassanjo has come a long way. However , the recent attempt at constitutional amendment to allow Obassanjo to run again will not help the growth of democracy in Nigeria.Obassanjo , and other African rulers needs to learn to become comfortable with leaving power to successors.
Nigeria's story is especially a sad story in that this giant country ,by size, population and natural resources could have been Africa's success story and an engine to the transformation of the continent. An internationally acclaimed Nigerian playwright and political activist ,Wole Soyinka underscored this fact when he described his generation as "a wasted generation".
If Nigeria wants to preach democracy to the Gambia , that is fine but Nigeria also needs to pracice what it preaches first.
Thanks.

On the contrary, I believe that Nigeria can teach us democracy. The word democracy is very difficult to define, but let us take it to mean good behaviour or governance.

When Nigeria teaches us good behaviour we should listen and learn and not reject it because she is not behaving well. Simple. Obersanjo's advice to Yahya to accept the MOU is a good thing for the Gambia and the political situation within. If he was able to convince him to go for a term presidency and the man accepts and insert it in the constitution, won't that be a good thing for us? Of course it would be.
We all got some thing to learn from each other, no matter what. This is why I am hooked on this forum daily, to learn from you guys and to contribute some knowledge as well.

It is often said that experience is the best teacher and may be Nigeria has a lot of advice for us. However, i believe that experience is the worst teacher because it provides the answer before the test, at least in an academic sense.

Hi
I am back on this topic also
I don't agree for a second that Nigeria can teach the Gambia anything on democracy.
Those who do may not either understand the meaning of Democracy.....
Government of the people ..by the the people.
When Nigeria gained her independance from britain in 1960,She had the least taste of a people's government than any west African government.
When General Ironsi decided to tforcefully take over power from priminister Alh.Sir Abubakr Tafawa Belewa, the junta brutally murdered him together with the Saduana of Sokoto.
Since General Yakubu Gowan(Founder of the Gang of thieves of the Nigerian military, there has always been Nigerian military dominance into Nigerian affairs.Obansanjo was a major then and was part of the hierachy.
Since then the people of Nigeria had never had a people's selected government.President Sohnikan was forced to step down by the Gang
Alhagie Saikou Saghareh was overthrown by the very Gang;Babangida, Sanni Abacha,Gen. Muhamed Buhari,Major Gen. Abdou Salami Abubakr, and the notorious killer of the gang major Gen.Ebenezer and Sanni Abacha as the then head of the special squard(Dead murderers)
We all know that these gang has been plunging Africa's economic giant into Africa's worst curropted Countries of the sub region. They have been suceeding each other like a royal family.Do not be fooled for Obansanjo...After The death of Gen. Murtala Muhamed, He(Obansanjo) was asked to come take over? He was then the next in line to the gang throne.
The reason He is now seeking a third term despite against the constitution was because amongst the Gang only Babangida should take over as planned but the system is not ready.Even vice president Atiku knows this thats why he is not making more noise than necessary.
Gambia had 30 years of democratic rule.Just these ten years of military rule cannot be tought by Nigeria with democracy 4 there is none in Nigeria at all.My friends I was in Abuja..built some 15 to 20 years ago...all the bigmen were ex military Gens. and Personels.Oh my god don't make me sick. The worldwide,Nigeria would be rated as one of the worst curropted nations.
I think Obansanjo should learn from small brother Gambia about Democracy.
peace
