3 Guys walking to the soccer field. 2 athletics, 1 is fat. You jambo. You are the fat one. 2 athletics guys kind of making fun of you because you are not athletic and can't be as good as them. They are mocking you. They teasing you. What do you do?

Jambo you are close. But social intelligence it is not about what to do about winning in soccer in this case, it is about how you interact with others and communicate and create win win situation for everyone.

In our example you would say 'f you, i don't need your approval'. Or you would go lose some weight. Anyway, the answer is how you deal with this situation and you are the winner. One author give following example.

The fat boy says: Hey guys, you guys are really good in soccer. I am not that good, but I am good other things. Show me anything I can draw.

Athletic guys are shocked with fat boys' sincerity. Fat boy continues. "I really like to improve my soccer skills and be as good as you guys one day".

Athletic boys say: Hey, come join us. Maybe we can show you one thing or other.

Fat boy shown the great social intelligence here and turn something potentially confrontation to a positive things for himself. He may still suck in soccer but he made two bullies to be his friend. Win Win situation.

p.s. this was taken from a book about social intelligence.

Social intelligence was a concept that was discussed after 'emotional intelligence'. This is about you know some guys everyone likes and hang out.

Alhassan

I am not sure about social compitence, but sounds like it may be similar to it.

I had a fair idea of what social intelligence meant, and Turks example did explain it quite well.
I smiled because of the ever expanding terms and phrases that Social scientist and Anthropologist have decided to deluge us with, in an attempt, i suppose, to expose our shortcomings as intellectuals.
Somehow i thought they was once a word for that, TACT

So now as we observe social engineering in action, government have got to employ social intelligence with its relationship with the electorate(or does the intelligence thing limits itself to people).

really Turk? bullies would immediatly be taken aback and "shocked" by "overweight boy's sincerity"......i dont know where you have unearthed this example, but the person who wrote this has obviously spent most of his time sheltered from real life or lived most of his/her life in middle class surburbia. Believe me as a person who grew up on a "council estate", if i was to say "hey guys i would really like to improve my soccer skills", they would turn around and say "p*** off fatty, lose some weight first". You cant reason with bullies... this isnt "little house on the prairie". Come on, who wants bullies as friends? Sounds like "overweight boy" is taking the easy way out..... . "ass licking people " and "stroking peoples egos" cos you cant handle name calling, or because these people are popular(needs to fit in) is a "LOSE LOSE" situation.

Social interaction is a very important skill. I teach autistic children and they dont 'get' social interaction. I have to teach them HOW to be social, HOW to interact, they need it spelling out to them.

Thanks for demostrating us what social intelligence not.

gambiabev

According to some search people in IT field are lacking social intelligence. So are 'nerds' good in science/maths but are lacking social intelligence. Genious Albert Eistein was autistic. Anyway, emotional/social intelligence show us how diverse human being is. Imagine, Mozart may have been considered dummy when tested with math while mastering in music.

Anyway

http://www.danielgoleman.info is the author I read the book. It was quite interesting.

Turk

You are exactly right.

High intelligence is sometimes located to a specific thing: computing, trains, history...whatever. These 'nerds' are high functioning autistics known as aspergers ......

They are extremely clever in a very limited field. Take them out of their comfort zone and they cant function.

Also often loners because, sadly , they dont have a clue how the other half thinks and functions and flirting is totally beyond them.

the art of conversation is a wonderful thing, social skills are important, it is one of the reasons I am keen on any student i support in Gambia visiting other places outside of their village, joing guides, red cross or after school activites. this is not about academic qualifications they can be learnt from a book, but social skills are aquired and you can be judged by them. MANNERS ARE IMPORTANT
