UDP Leader Leaves for US
Tuesday 14th March 2006

By Abdoulie Nyokey

The Secretary General of the United Democratic Party (UDP) left Banjul yesterday for the United States of America, The Point can reveal.

Lawyer Ousainou Darboe also the flag-bearer of the UDP/NRP alliance will be in the US for two weeks during which he will meet the Gambian community and the various chapters of his party there.

He was accompanied by Mr Amadou Taal, the Administrative Secretary in charge of the party’s economic affairs.

In another news, addressing a mass political rally in Serekunda on Saturday, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe have vehemently denied reports that the UDP had pulled out of NADD because the party’s leader was interested in leadership. To Darboe, he was a patriot with the interest of The Gambia at heart, hence his decision to join NADD.

He described as inconsistent, the Secretary of State for Agriculture, Yankuba Touray, in justifying his (Darboe) decision to quit NADD in some of his statements and then faulting it in others.

“Which is which,” Yankuba was rhetorically questioned.

The UDP/NRP flag-bearer renewed his claim that the government of The Gambia was engaged in the lucrative business of selling lands confiscated from land owners in Brufut and Sukuta at the detriment of the land owners.

According to Darboe, there is no job security in Jammeh’s government for as he put it the man can sack even elected representatives of the people when and how he wants it.

I think Darboe has a lot of explaining to do on why he withdrew from NADD.He should explain what mistrust he is talking about because that is not enough to withdraw.People should show their dissappointment about the breakup of NADD.Is it only leadership that he is interested in or the national interest of getting rid of Jammeh. He should know that history will judge him for betraying the cause and UDP/NRP cannot win alone without NADD now.The only way forward is for him to reconcile with NADD for a better Gambia.

The Gambia's political situation is distressing. i just don't know who to trust anymore. i am very certain that NADD cannot win the next election neither UDP/NRP coalition. the simple fact is that the breakup has weaken both coalitions.
Darboe still has not come up with a reason that can convince me and many like myself to accept his withdrawal from the NADD. he only talked about mistrust which entails a lot of things. i think he has to bite the bullet and come up with a specific reason that forced him to break away. until that moment, i remained convinced that he is one of the nasty power hungry African leaders who are bent on enslaving Africans.
i do think about our (we Gambians) situation a lot and it puts me in so much stress. i never want to convince myself that we are a failed state because we can turn things the other way round if we are ready to do it.
i think Gambians in USA should come together as they did in helping with the formation of NADD, and put things straight to Darboe. They should involve him in dialogue to change his stance on NADD. the way things are going, the only winner is Junkung. one does not need to have a political degree in the kitty to know that. so lets all be prepared to see another 5 year term of AFPRC.
i have recently agreed a lot with one member of this bantaba. he is Kondorong. his idea of looking at ourselves before blaming others is a red hot truth. surely, our society is our own image. until we are ready to look at ourselves and commit to a positive reform, we are doomed to fail for ever.

"New York-Sunday, March 12, 2006 the chapter of the UDP New York Branch held a meeting at the Gambian Society Hall for five hours. During this meeting Gambians elders, civil representatives and the Party officials got together to assess the party campaigns during the past weeks after it formed an Alliance with the NRP.

Mr Omar Kebba Mass who chaired the meeting told the gathering the difference between winning and losing depend on the extra efforts that people make- the saccifices, the teamwork, and the solid fundamentals being followed. The United Democratic Party has all this going for it and more thanks to our huge, powerful grass roots volunteer efforts.

Mr Mass went on to say, our job is to spend time talking to voters back home whether they are young or old to be ready to vote for the UDP/NPR coalition and to raise funds for the coalition.

Mr. Omar Trawally said that now the time has come for him and any commited Gambian to do a serious work for the UDP/NRP coalition. Mr trawally went on after seeing the UDP/NRP rallies on DVDs, he is convenced that this coalition is prepared to do the work for the Gambians.

Mr Wassa Janneh said, the UDP chapter was formed in New York since 1996 when none of the party candidates was here but when we came took over the work but today we are here giving it back to you people to run it. We are taking a the back seats because we feel you people are more effective than we the former UDP candidates ourselves.

Among the speakers were Alhagie sanjani Touray, Alhagie Mohamed Tunkara, Jarga Touray, Alasana Tambajang, Sarjo Bah, Alhagie Yaya Camara, Demba Sanyang, Sulayman Dibba , Pa Saikou Kujabi Alagi Jaiteh and myself.

Safe your breath compatriots. There are prople who like this type of political game in the hope of gaining something out of it in the future. It is just like the PPP era and as it is now with dictator Jammeh.

We should concentrate on trying to let people know what NADD has presented to us as a nation and these parties that have now withdrawn are in full cognisance and signatories to.

We should not be discouraged if we belief in the truth.

If we rejoin these people again, who konows what would happen in the future?

The one who betray you when you are not strong, what would you expect from that one when you give him/her more power to distroy you?

The future is in the truth.

Let us help the ones who stayed in NADD for the sake of the progress.

DARBOE'S ACTIONS SPOKE CLEARLY WITH HIGH VOLUMES. WE JUST WINTESSED ANOTHER SELFISH, GREEDY AND INCONSIDERATE LEADER IN HIS BEST BEHAVIOR. HIS EXCUSE TO PULL OUT OF NADD IS DUBIOUS, IRRATIONAL AND IRRESPONSIBLE.

DURING HIS LAST VISIT TO ATLANTA HE WAS ASKED IF HE WILL RECOGNIZED ANY CANDIDATE OTHER THAN HIM, AND HIS RESPONSE WAS A SOLID "YES". HOW CAN THE SAME DARBOE JUST PULL OUT OF NADD AT THIS CRUCIAL MOMENT? IF DARBOE IS SO PATRIOTIC AS HE CLAIMED, HE SHOULD HAVE EMBRACED A SOLUTION AND NOT A SEPARATION.

TO THE SO CALLED UDP/NRP, BE AWARE THAT YOUR CANDIDATE'S INTEGRITY IS AT ITS LOWEST POINT.

Dont worry about the supporters of UDP/NRP, we all know Darboe will to do a runner if the going gets tough, He has done it before and will do it again. He ran and left his supporters stranded at the miser of Jammeh's soldiers and again congratulated jammeh out of fear without consulting his party members. He thinks about himself and his family only.People should learn from the pass and elect someone you they can trust to handle the affairs of a nation. And we have that in NADD and Halifa.

Hey hey

Democracy is all about the right of each individual to express his feelings and the right to elect and be elected. You should not be angry. I am disappointed but not angry because Ousainou has the right to belong to a party of his choice. he may have betrayed your cause but in a democracy those freedoms have to be gaurded.

Your responsibility as a democrat is to continue to convince people no matter how long it takes to change their minds and believe in what you are saying. It is a difficult and sometimes frustrating system of government but it is based on consensus rather than coersion. To insinuate the killing of an oponent makes you no less than the despots we are trying to condemn. Sometimes i wonder if our society has any tolerance for divergent views as i have seen many people on this bantaba turning recalcitrant when challenged. Like i said before and still now, we are a reflection of our society.

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.”
