the situation of Gambian associations failing to attract more members is an embarassing concern for many executive members.the plight of deseased gambians shipment from England back home as become a big financial dilema for the Gambians association of Birmingham U.K .the lates report stated that the association is so under funded they cannot afford transporting dead Gambian back to the Gambia.
this week a gambian passed away ,but the big worry would be how to finance his transportation.we never plan for our demise in foriengn lands but with group effort ,some difficulties could be ease.join hands where ever you are ,be part of your community .pay your little subscribstion. the brimingham monthly subscription i believe is only £5 .the number of gambians in that city is over four thousand i was told.
to transport a body back cost round about £3500 .imagine if every body pays their membership contributions .some months ago the body that was transported was left on the shoulders of few commited members, they end paying each close to £200 because many gambians don't want be disturbe.it is very sad.the president said to me ''we could not have the complete money to pay the funeral directors ,we have to tell them to arrange the shipment and we will pay later.he said they put £2000 and the funeral director gave them three months to find the balance .we went to knock gambians doors but many where telling us ,i will pay later.''
this is depressing hearing and i am sure it will be depressing reading.
where is our group mentality gone ? ''no man stands alone ,no man is an island''.even if you cannot attend every meetings but try to set a direct debit for your little contributions.
for gambians in Birmingham u.k contact Ansuma Barrow if you want to pay your contributions and be part of gambian affairs .his number 07723348234 .for Gambians in Coventry u.k contact Karabulae Kamara for the gambians coventry association which is new on 07787980522.for the area you are please ask others .in leeds and hudderfied area there are similar associations. for huddersfied contact Essa Bah on 07985558547 .remember any thing could happen to any of us at any time. may the almihty God look after us and close our ranks .may unity prevail other division and individualism .
thanks .

In australia, there are not as many as gambians and other than BBQ parties, not much events going on either.

There are more senegalise families and gambians try to be part of bigger senegambia community but still do not work. I have tried to push for some activity as I want my daughter to be part of strong communty for her african side but gambians seems to have no interests. Any comments?

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

thanks turk for picking up on the issue. the only time Gambians are willing to come out in numbers is when there is some sort of party going on.example try inviting Jaliba or any sengalise musician for that matter ,you will see them come out of every where ,even disquise individuals you think aren't gambians will attend.
but other than that ,it is hard to bring us together.some associations in u.s are a bit organise but even that membership attendance is a problem.we carry our petty division with us every where .Banjulians ,serrekunda's folks ,bakaunkas ,gunjure ,brikama ,bolonkono people ,badibus etc and then you have the wider dividing factor (wollof suspect mandinkas as executive members and mandinkas suspect wollofs as executive leaders ,and fulas are nutral ) in the meetings ,every one wants to speak in his/her language .now if you cannot speak wollof or mandinka you are left out .the wollof man would say dekuma soseh and the mandinka man would say nmansuruwa kan moi ( i canot speak wollof and i cannot speak mandinka ) disilusion build in and people stay away.
the new association we started ,we made it a point of duty for us to converse in english for the benefit of every one.
also we made the selection of executive members to be accross every single tribe .a fair and balance set up.
but even after all that ,some will continue to mind their business.
i made a comprision with our asian neigbours .amean ,this people are organise and powerful.they look out for each other. i remember one of my friend from businbala who lost his son in london .to gather gambians was so hard ,the asians help us prepare the body and provide transportation for a paltry cost .when gambians start arriving ,the burial was already done.
and this cases are every where. we assume ,i am in europe for just the time being ,but we end up living there with families for eternity without any logistics of death ,sickness etc. we don't want think about sad eventualities.
turk ,i can go on and on .we need to encourage each other ,we all have child mentality some times ,we need coxing .keep trying .

Santanfara,
If there are no funds burry them where thay die. There is no harm in it. I have already decided with my children. It is not Islamic to send ded bodies accross the globe just for burial. Otherwise every one who wants to be sent home when dead, should fund their own insurance to cover the cost. What signifacance is there to send a dead body home?

No significance for the body, but comfort for those remaining to go and visit and perhaps talk a little of happy times and memories.Practical ? No. Comforting ? .....Certainly.

alhasan ,you are right .it is not necessary to ship a dead body 6 thousand miles away but remember we don't wish to die in foriengn soil .if it happens ,the families backhome become devastaded so to comfort them as toubab puts it is the only way to consol parents and family members.
islamicaly it is not advice for people to ship the bodies i aggree.our unity is not just for sad occassion but also other matters of high value .

It is all very well for some one to say that he does not care to buried wherever he dies . Thats okay. But what does it cost to bury dead body in UK ? Then the other question is how long do the cemetery keep the bodies buried , I seem to understand that in some areas the bodies are later dug up to make space for new burials if that is true some one people may object given certain Islamic dictates on that sort of practice. I agree that it is sad that we Gambians living in The UK are not very helpful to each other especially in our dealings with each other alive what then do we expect to get from our compatriots when we die. the sad part of this whole matter is that at times those who do care lest for such moves fall victim and then the caring ones dole up the necessary funds to bury them here or send their bodies home. Burial here or back home is still about expenses. What we can do about this is a big question but something certainly most be done . Ansumana barrow and co are great people and Allah will repay them but Gambians abroad are very un co-operative in these regards and we all suffer as a result. What some thing as being smart is in reality very stupid because none of knows when we will die and what our financial situation will be at the time of such death. Contributing to this fund is the greatest and wisest act we can undertake for ourselves and others .
