1986, 3389 Gambians were retrenched from work. However only 650 were trained by IBAS to find other employment. The rest just melted in the system or perhaps resurfaced again.

Our annual debt service was about US$9.00 million. We really missed a golden oportunity. ( See world bank report NO. 5693 GM on page 11).

Infact in 1965, our external debt was a mere US$5.00 million and by 1970 it rose to 106 million dolars and finally became unmanageable by 1987 when it stood at 273.00 million dollars.

Was that aid money or assistance that landed Ebou Taal in Mile two prisons?

This Ebou Taal was apparently jailed around the same period just after the abortive coup for two years i think. He was guilty of some kind of theft link with Aid for after coup reconstruction. This man served in many capcities during Jawara's time and later resurfaced during Jammeh's time mainly in the diplomatic missions. His accreditation to the UK was rejected based on his past conviction some alledged.

In the Gambia, the people of different tribes and regions have been enjoying wonderful joking relationship( Snawuya). forexample jarra and niumi, kiang and badibu, jolas and fula, cassama and darboe and so on.
I am interested to knowing how some of these joking relationships came about, especially the inter-regional ones like kiang and badibu, jarra and niumi and so on.
Does any one in the frum knows how these relationships came about?
One thing i know is that the jarrankas are the elders to the nuiminkas.

The Gambia Currency Board was formed in October 1964 and continued in existence until 1971 when the Central Bank of the Gambia was formed. In fact from 1965 up to 1970, the Gambian currency was in pounds and shillings.

The one-pound note became like the five dalasi, and the 10-shilling note also was changed to the ten dalasi whilst the five pounds note became the twenty-five dalasi note. All the three notes (1 and 5 pounds and 10 shillings) had a sailing boat on them, which were removed after the central bank came into effect.

Political followers would agree that after the coup of 1994, NCP supporters, who had a sailing boat as their emblem, teased PPP supporters that when their boat finally docked in Banjul, Jawara lost the presidency. Jawara was whisked on USS Lamoure County that was docked in our waters for training exercises that morning. PPP members used to tease NCP supporters that their boat will never dock.

Actually Sir Farimang Singhateh was not the first Governor General after independence. He succeede Sir John Warburton who ruled from 18th Fb. 1965 to 9th February 1966. Sir Farimang took over fro Fe. 9 1966 to 24th April 1970 when we became a Republic.

The oldest gambian Newspaper was called the INTELLIGENTIA incorporated around 1890. The only known surving copy was at the Archives but in need of serious repair. It was so old that the paper would break if you tried to open it. I hope they have preserved this historical document. Te archives does not have a qualified restorative officer to save national documents.

Sooner or later these national assets will become history. Someone is badly needed to be trained. Through out the country there is no qualified professional in this field.

Out of the 335 invitees to the Independence State ball in 1965, 300 were Englishmen and only 35 were Gambians.

In response to an attack by Kalilu Singhateh MP for Lower Baddibu about the invitations, Jawara responded "... We will be judged not by the measure of our jubilation, but by the energy we bring to solving the problems of Independence"

He borrowed from Nkrummah. Achimota College was being relived

The Speech from the Throne read by the Duke of Kent on behalf of the Queen on Independence Day at the opening of the National Assembly was actually written by Gambians and not from London. Very funny. It was then we received our Constitutional Instruments from the Queeen.
