Wellington Street which is the commercial street was named fter his boss Duke of Wellington in honor of the Battle of Waterloo.

Cpt Grant must have just finished fighting in Waterloo (1815) to be deployed in The Gambia in 1816 where he established Bathurst. He should have named it Wellington like in New Zealand. or perhpas after Napoleon

Njuks you have a sharp mind. Thst wy his title was Captain (Commandant) and not administrator of governor.

It was named after Earl Burthust the then Secretary for Coloniies who would have been Wellington's Boss.
