anyway i have never heard it. was it in english, mandinka, wollof? remember before the Lady Chilel there were several boats going up the river etc. there was the Lady Wright too. i think Titanic seems a bit far off as i dont think there even a song like that in English itself?
most likely it was a previous boat disaster.
As i was told in school it was a boat disater and about love lives shattered. It was in English just like Sankajang wrote it. |

Actually i was just guesing that it was lady chilel, But it could as well be about some other ship.In fact if the song existed before the sinking of lady chilel then it must be about some other ship.Like con said the song wasin english. |

Hej Fellows, The boat you are refering to is Lady Denham. You can see it sometimes when it is low tide. When I went to Armitage by Lady Wright, she used to hoot for a couple of times whilst passing by. At low tide one used to see the mast. I think it is not far away from Kuntaur.(I am not sure of the location) Does this help? |

alhassan, i googled Lady Denham and this is what i got from a novel by Nana Grey Johnson
''The freighter and passenger steamer, HMCS Lady Denham (named after the wife of Governor of the Gambia from 1928 to 1930, Sir E. Denham), will sink after colliding with another steamer, HMCS Vic 20 three miles above Nianimaru''
so now we have four ships. i didnt know about Lady Denham or Victoria. Nianimaru might be a village or Niani???
Lady Chilel Lady Wright Lady Denham HMSC Victoria
anymore ??perhaps some of the olders members can tell us a bit about these vessels, what they used to carry , time period, who owned them, did they all sink??
Biraago & Co???? |

Alhassan is right where Lady Denham sank. Its a place between Nianimaru and Kuntaur. I heard that there were no casualties when it sank. My guess about the song is that it is about the Titanic. The song existed long before we had Independence. |

i c, i have just read that there was another vessel called the Prince of Wales. the lists doesn't seem to end (5 now). i did not know about all of these vessels. it seems its fair to say the colonial government recognised the importance of the river more than post-independence gambia. its a pity.

Njucks, There was another one called Fulladou. Myabe some of the older ones remember it too. It was in the river until sold in the early 70's to somebody. Prince of Wales was not that known. I can remember some of the older generatoin who used to tell stories about the said incident. |

Njucks, There was a smaller vessel the former president used to spend the night in during his tours to the provinces. I think it was called "Mansakilla Ba". I wonder what happened to it. Another one was used for the postal services too but I can't remember which one.
A small ambulance boat also used to sail between Kuntaur and Bansang hospital in the mid 70s.
Yes, Fuladou was another vessel. |

Modou, I think you mean the Stand Hope. It was a TPO(Traveling post office) Mansakila Ba is out of service nowadays. To correct my former posting, I forgot to recall that the remains of the Prince of Wales could still be seen at lowtide by the Bond Road. When I was a child we used to dive there to find coins(Grass madi. This was one of our childhood games at Banjul South or AFDIE. To answer Njucks question, I surpose they were owned by the state of Gambia or partly Gambia and the other part belonged to the Crown.(Bratain)As for Lady Wright, Fulladou, Mansakila Ba and Stand Hope they belonged to the Gambia Government. Mansakila Ba was left to us by governor Win haris I think and was used by DK Jawara until they bought another one. The Lady Chilel was not introduced in my presense in the Gambia. I can't remember it. Other wise it was the GRT that owned some boats that used to transit groundnuts from the river. |

I am realy learning some things i haven't known before. Among all the vessels named so far, it is only two i heard about as far as i can remember, lady chilel and lady wright. i think it will be a wonderful to know about this vessels, since they have been part of our country's history. By the way, i think it will realy helpful and life saving if the authories can create another river ambulace to help reduce the time delay in trasporting patient to hospital. |

thanks Ebra so far ten (10). perhaps its worth asking whats with all these sinking? almost all the vessels sank? why ? were they too old or poor navigation along the river??
but i agree its about time we have another proper cruise ship capable of transporting goods and cars as well. i think the scandinavian countries have an excellent experience in this field. Norway is a good example. |
