Certainly Madiba, it makes better sense that Brits ensure maximum utilisation of land and rain water by cultivating abundance of vegetables and producing eggs. I have in no way imply that British people have no pride in choosing what is MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN. Even in India, the slogan BE INDIA, BUY INDIA has been ringing loud and clear. My example clearly points to a common desire for IMPORTED products and services and that is typically universval. Lurpark butter is still favoured by many English but that does not imply local products are being abandoned. The bottom line is that our Gambian Dalasi cannot grow on tree tops. We need better commitment than cooking facts and figures for political glory. I agree with the bit of your post regarding how Gambians need buckling up tighter.

Politicians cooking facts and figures is not right. It takes concerned tax payers to demand the fact of matters.

Does that suggests we have to resign from challenging those who refuse telling the truth; politician or political supporter??

You are right toubab not all capitalists are greedy.

Kondorong, you might be right that the appreciation of the dalasi is not as a result of goog performance on our side but due the factors mentioned in one of your postings.

How can we development when the government is not putting any effort into manufacturing. We have to import milk when we have plenty of cows, tomato paste when we have one of the most fertile lands, fish when we have a wide ocean and a river, even water we have to import.

Secondly, our government should now focus on skills not only book education, one example is training peolple to manufacture solar panels for the african sun, making sardines out of 'kobo', making our own clothes out of cotton, the list can go on and on. But what is this govenrment doing fat elephant projects that will never benefit any one in the long run.

Manufacturing is one main factor that can greatly appreciate the dalasis and provide employment.

I was talking to some European bussinessman about the apreceation of the dalasi, they say that there are just not enough dalasis at the moment and the banks are full with foreign exchange. Maybe they took the old dirty notes out of roulation and didn,t replace them yet by new ones, they say it is difficult to change your money now.
A chairman of a Dutch NGO told me the same, he wanted to put a large amount of euros into his account at the Standard Chartered bank, the bank refused the money and said they had to much euros and needed dalasis, he was send away and was told to change the money somewhere else and to come back with dalasis, it took him two days to change the money and bring dalasis to the bank

It is time to loosen monetary policies because the central was tigtening monetary policies in the past and it is about time that they start putting more dalasis in the market. The former chairman of the Fedral reserve system, Alan Greenspan was really good at this and as easy as it may sounds it is a very important area.

The foroyaa newspaper also reported that because of the fear that the government might force prices down due to the ramadan, importers are holding their foreign currencies(importing less) and as a result created excess foreign exchange in the Gambia. This is one of the disadvantages of too much government intervention.

How is dalasi valued? Is it decided by authorities? or based on suppy and demand?

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.
