Power is the single most dangerous thing destroying Africa. Our leaders confuse power with authority and blindly believe that its a devine inclination for them to rule forever.Below is an excert of an article by George Ayiteh,One of my mentors and he beautifully put africa's problems like this......,"The wars and problems of Africa have nothing to do with imperialism Nor do they have anything to do with borders or national rivalries. These wars are over one thing -- POWER: Power to allocate resources to oneself, cronies and tribesmen; power to crush one's enemies; and power to perpetuate oneself in office". "Government," as it usually conceptualized, does not exist in many African countries. What exists is a "mafia state" -- a government hijacked by a platoon of crooks, bandits and scoundrels, who use the machinery of the state to enrich themselves, their cronies and kinsmen and exclude everyone else ("the politics of exclusion"). The richest people in Africa are heads of state and their cohorts of ministers. As the old saying goes,"Power corrupts" and there is no place is this evident than in Africa. We should remove the emphasis on power and wealth and more to humanitarian and straight thinking politics.People stop thinking the moment they taste power and so lead their countries to catasrophe. This is in the same light that I dont have any hope for the opposition in Gambia because the opposition is badly fragmented into factions even though they might claim to be one now(NADD).Prone to unsubstatiated squabbling and allowing the tyrant in power to exploit divisions in the opposition, play one faction against the other ("divide and conquer) and maintain his grip on power. They are also susceptible to bribery and corruption, factional and opposition leaders can easily be co-opted or bought just like some of the deffectors to APRC.Until the whole mentality and approach of the opposition changes and restructured,I dont see them anywhere near winning any election in Gambia for a long time to come. The whole political situation makes me sick.

Hi Emjay

Do you think African Countries are reverting back to the original order before when Africa's geography was made up into numerous kingdoms who swallowed up smaller ones and made allegiences with others to maximise their power and accumulate their wealth? Which enabled them to become so susceptible to outside manipulation by European forces who in turn conquered them all with the exception of Absynnia whose Emperor Yohannis united the different clans to defend their freedom.
