With the recent seizure of an empty sailing boat by The Senegalese authorities with 1.2 metric tons of cocaine, it seems West Africa is becoming a new transit point for drugs to Western Europe.
Guinea-Bissau is also said to becoming a "naco-state" according to an article on the BBC website and it seems Gambia is no exception.
I hereby share a first hand account of the narcotics trade that I received from a Dutch Bantaba visitor. Although the statement mentions Nigerians, I don’t believe they are the only ones involved. -----------------------------
“Banjul and Amsterdam new main ports in cocaine trade
About ten years ago the Caribbean became the center of the cocaine trade, especially a lot was traded from the Dutch Antilles, our government took action and has send the navy to patrol the sea and cease the drugs, the last years they are more successful and the Colombians started looking for new trade ways. I guess about 3 or 4 years ago Colombian containerships started dumping large quantities of cocaine on the Bijagos archipel in Guinnee Bissau. I have travelled that area it is very difficult to acces and there is no control from the central government. From there the drugs are transported by piroque to the Casamance and from there maybe by rebels or with the old diamond traders to Gambia and Senegal. Gambia is getting flooded by cocaine and the trade is getting more professional by the day. You see more court cases involving cocaine the last couple of years in Gambia and there are so many British telling stories about expat cocaine parties and abuse in Gambia. to my knowledge a little more then one year Nigerians are caught from flights from Banjul carrying cocaine. Since half a year the numbers are growing fast, Gambians too are arrested at Gatwick carrying drugs . last month the Belgian police arrested a gang of drugs traffickers working at the luggage department taking a 120 kilos of cocaine from Banjul every week for the past 18 months! At Amsterdam there used to be almost no Nigerian flying from Banjul to Amsterdam, now every week there are more coming, up to 40 Nigerians last week they caught 8 with cocaine and let the rest go free like they do every week. last weekend there was a big article in a Dutch newspaper about a very big Nigerian cocaine cartel using Amsterdam as its base, police caught 23 persons but told the paper that hundreds of Nigerians are involved in that trade in Amsterdam, the leaders have many nicknames and change houses and phones every two weeks. Because this trade is a multi billion dollar trade I am afraid that Nigerian criminal gangs are going to take over large parts of Gambian community completely and because of large corruption it is very hard to stop, it will give Gambia a bad name and will scare of tourists, then you have the risk the criminals will create a cocaine market in Gambia to make people addicted and crime figures will rise. this problem is too big for Gambia to fight on its own, that’s why I am writing to Dutch customs and police too. But some one has to awaken the Gambian community and warn against the dangers. of course cocaine will bring a lot of money and development for some but in my opinion the negative effects will be much bigger”.

What is wrong with that. Isn't it excellent idea to get some cash for these countries? |

Turk, yes a few drug barons will get rich but thousands of other souls will end up in misery whilst others will loose their lives very early. I guess you would not like your child to become a drug addict whilst someone is getting rich out of her misery. Perhaps you should pay a visit to Campama in Banjul the next time you are in Gambia to see how many young people lost their minds due to drugs. We don’t need a society where the economy is built on narcotics trade. I am sure you know that civil war due to rivalry between drug cartels is another danger. |

The sniffer dogs were used for each individual person into Gatwick on my flight from Banjul in June also! In twenty years that was the first time - but suspect it will be a normalty now.

Hi Guys,
It's sicken to hear that cocaine's menance has touched the shores of Gambia. A plan on how to nip this social economic menace from plucking at its root before it starts destroying Gambia culture needs to be introduced swiftly. Here's something GRTS could do, raising public awareness on the issue and produce some documentaries that can make a real difference to Gambian youth culture.
Peace

toubab1020, I suggest you take it easy with what ever you know about Canabis or the users. We are talking about the killer drug that is affecting our lives for the past number of years. Sometime ago there was a posting from Junack Island Gambia. This film was a propaganda for us to turn our eye off the big fish. Are you an agent Toubab1020? When people try to clean the cost from Cocain and Herion, you confuse people by such postings. Please do not mix things up for us to turn our eyes from the big fish. We must give 100% concentration on there Mafia from Latin America. This I have mentioned before but nobody could agree with me then. Now things are a lot worse than it have been. I think even the Gambia government has no equipment for testing. I would not Put the blaim on the Nigerians that have been mentioned above in the original posting. Gambians are very greddy people too. To sister Omega I would say there are Gambians involved in these terrible acts but I hope God wiill expose them soon. It is not yet too late for the government to do something, but corruption is the problem here. It would be better if the EU stations custom officers in these countries to work side by side with the lokan custom officials to ensure 0 tolerance. There are already too many Gambian Junkeys and it is time we ourselves put a stop to it. In Sweden Gambians are famous of drug smuggeling and trafficking. Likewise in some EU countries. How many Gambians are in the Prisons serving terms like 14 years or 10 years. There are a number of young Gambians who are currently serving these jail terms in Sweden. Funny too that most of them are Talibehs of the socalled Cherno Bogal. There are even women victims. Gambian men using Gambian women as courries. This is appauling. |
