In what can be described as an orderly transition of political power, Gordon Brown succeeds Tony Blair as Prime Minister of Britain. What is there for countries like Gambia to learn from this orderly succession? Excess passion for political power has the prospects of breeding excess conflicts.

True what you say, Santanfara, however I (as a fellow Scot) would personally have preferred the likes of John Reid rather than the extremely bland Gordon Brown who is more English than the English at times! And worryingly, in practice Brown's policies as Chancellor of the Exchequer have resulted in the poorest fifth of households in the UK comparatively paying more tax and receiving a lower share of benefits since Labour's election victory in 1997.

Don't even get me started on the 'Scottish' digs that will come from the press when they start to focus on his style of governing, cabinet choice, etc ....

MEME ,i can't aggree more . mr browm is a good and capable person but he let the multi-nationals get there way ,which means less tax for companies more tax for the poor. this help in stabilising the economy and increase borrowing .more tax on the poor and the companies are happy .this is his equation. businesses now have so much power they can virtually dictate to governments . brown wants a strong britsih economy ,this goes with hardship for the average person. most hedge funds are not in reality helping in maintaining a viable work force ,they are what is now non as asset stripers or casino corperations. they buy a profit making company and virtually strip dowm to zero .browm need looking at that because the government gain nothing from those type of fund managers. let's wait and see . the media is been careful on how they are treating the first scots ,the scot are in charge heey

Still in his first week as Prime Minister of Britain Gordon Brown today began a challenge on the sweeping powers of a sitting British Prime Minister. His move to axe down the powers of the Prime Minister declaring war exclusively, is real courage. It is this type of progress we need in Gambia (Africa.) In a reverse order, African presidents like to boost their powers towards further dictatorship. This move by Gordon Brown is genuine progress for a start.
