I am surprised, Santanfara - i consider myself very liberal. Live and let live has always been my motto, although there are limits. If by liberal you mean 'decadent on the verge of indecent' - no i am not, i am too old for that.
Now where can i begin? I suspect Amsterdam would be too liberal for you, although if you buy a good guide there are many beautiful historical places to be seen, try to keep out of the tourist masses. Rotterdam (being bombed in WW II) has a very modern centre and is famous for its architecture. All along the coast we have beautiful beaches, but i myself think the beaches in Zeeland are the most beautiful (and mostly not too crowded). I don't know if you want to travel around, or stay in one place and make trips from there (easy to do since it's only a small country). The eastern provinces of Overrijsel and Drente have a beautiful green countryside and Friesland is famous for its lakes (with nice small towns around) Oh man, this is a very nice country and it will be hard to find a person who doesn't speak English reasonably! You will find you are very welcome! |

I would recommend a visit to The Hague as it's so lovely (sorry, Anna, Utrecht is fab too!)and near to Madurodam and also Scheveningen which is an easy way to cram touristy stuff into one location and what about the Venice of the North - Giethorn? Make sure you try out the pancakes, Indonesian rijstafel, french fries with mayonnaise and, if you're feeling really adventurous, the raw herring ... oh, and try getting about on a bike if you're outside the big cities ....
You'll have a wonderful time, Santa! |

Well, how nice that you all are so enthusiastic about my country!! Strangely enough, i found that for a long time i took it all for granted and that i really started seeing how fresh and nice it was after i was showing my Gambian partner (who came here first in 2005) around.
Santafara, the big cities are indeed very multicultural and you might find it strange to see so many women wearing islamic headdress (far, far more than i have ever seen in the Gambia) or (especially in Amsterdam) to see so many black people (most of them Surinamese). The Hague is indeed a very beautiful, stately city (look up the Vredepaleis - Palace of Peace - where the Taylor-trial is held) but i find it not so 'gezellig' (typical Dutch word meaning something like 'cosy'). For that you would have to come to my city Utrecht indeed, which is a bit like Amsterdam but much smaller and quieter. By the way Tapalapa, Morgan Heritage will have a concert there on the 27th. They come every year and i saw them 2 years ago - very inspiring! Very peaceful atmosphere, black and white people of all ages (even whole families with young children) mixing and dancing. If you want to 'blow out' or just 'blow', Amsterdam is the place to be - but somehow i don't think this will be Santanfara's thing. Tapalapa, the Roots Festival will already start this weekend with a big (free) open air event in the Oosterpark where African and South American musicians will play, there will be workshops (like African dancing, djembe playing) and small stands selling African or South American-indian things. The park is always full of people, and my partner met all kinds of Gambians there last year, of whom he didn't even know they lived in Holland! By the way: the tulip season is over, but go see the Singel in A'dam - where they will sell all the flowers of the season, nicely displayed according to colour!
Jack, be honest: wouldn't it be much better to give Flemish Belgium to the Dutch, and the other (French) half to France? It's a strange country you're living in :-). Have to confess: i love to visit it, whether the Ardennes or the coast or just to shop till i drop in Antwerp.
You guys make me want to get into the car and drive somewhere nice!

Santanfara, Nobody asks you to stay in Amsterdam, I wonder why… The architecture of Amsterdam is interesting enough and so are the canals. I would definitely take a canal boat trip ”under 7 bridges” no matter it is for tourists. In the evenings bridges and houses are illuminated. Amsterdam is a big city but the central area is small enough to reach walking from side to side. Watch out for bikes! Everybody is biking but the streets are free from cars. Leidseplein is in the middle of everything, cafés, restaurants, theatres. There are a lot of museums if you are interested in arts. Take a walk in the green, large Vondelpark, but be warned– they might play some music there! Look for windmills, there are some at the heart of Amsterdam alongside the Amstel River. If you go to flower market, don’t buy the seed bags reading cannabis sativa
