You guys in Bantaba started a very progressive environment of sharing good views needed to take forward this little but good nation. In your good efforts to bring sanity on track, it is clearly seen how some others with whatever motives, prefer throwing their weight on the basket making things hard to progress. Anyone who thinks of dominating a country for life is nobody good for the people of that country. In our case, that is exactly the role Jammeh is playing. It happened that in the last 13 years, all was taken for granted. Now , we as humble citizens of this little country must not allow such insanity and arrogance to persist. Yahya Jammeh is no explorer to have re-discovered The Gambia (Santanfara). Gambians never for one moment thought a man they so trusted will turn around to become their tormentor, oppressor, exploiter, and killer. We can undo this state of affairs by the very good efforts all of you now resolve to subscribe. Kobo, Salmina, Dalton1, Baldeh, Santanfara, Momodou, Madiba, Gambiabev, Jambo, Serenata, Karl, Kondorong, Ebou4, Alhassan, Mansasulu, and the rest, for you all, it is due to your indulgence that we can come this far. Bread Man, Sister Omega, it is possible you love Gambia too. It is dangerous by all accounts to be blind defender of unsustainable situations. The fact that didvided by time and space constraints we are still able to relate so cordial, there is something to admire in that altogether. It costs no more than our few minutes and dancing fingers on the keyboard to have generated so much in so little a time. What you have all put together within short interval is far more of an output than what the socalled Secretaries of States in Gambia continue doing since 13 years. All they want is to stay until they loot so much national resources. Every word from Radio Gambia or the national GRTS and favoured media houses is nothing but agressive promo. We can liberate Gambia by believing and defending what they (our exploiters) don't believe and will never stand to see prevail. That is all about it Kobo. It is possible to organise Gambian minds and then to share positive values free from FEAR, FAVOUR and DECEIT, as you rightly put. Well done, compatriots. For the TERM LIMIT, it is so important a pillar to be played around with.
Thanks Karamba for the conclusion and END GAME MOVE on this topic.

The Analogy which I used is generic there for it can fit in any model. Of course you cannot throw such a loaded senario to me and expect me to answer that individual case.
karamba we are discussing issues of policy and not individuals per se. I presume you are an educated man and have had experience of debating on issues. The topic that you raised here was "Presidential Term Limit for the Gambia." We have already established that there is no limit. And most of us agree in principle that a term limit must at some stage be introduced. The question is when? Under what conditions? etc. This is a present a hypothethical senario sometime to be considered for in the future. It is not something which can be brought in immediately no matter how much people are passionate about it.
One of the prominent obstacles which has made some of the APRC transitionary period difficult is the obvious reality that Jammeh has learnt to be President via on the job training. His predecessor resided over a failed state for 29 years, which didn't build the infrastructure to equip its citzenry for Nation building and Jammeh is a product of the society. Regardless of the obstacles he has produced a successful state.
Yes there has indeed been firing and hiring let's be realistic the same hiring on mass has occurred in many countries. Jammeh needs to get a more educated, effective and efficient team. The Civil Service also needs to be invested in appreciated and motivated to perform better. A hard line approach all the time demotivates workers there does need to be incentives also to produce results. The culture of Civil Servants need to be changed they are accountable to following government rules, regulations and procedures.
Karamba of course it is good to work with people on the same wave as yourself you get more things done. However there is a difference between deceit and cohesion. The mere fact is if one cannot do a job and produce the outcomes that are expected from with the necessary resources required then they should go, to give someone else an opportunity do so.
Jammeh is not Our Creator he is not everywhere at all times. Those who have ulterior motives mainly steming from badmindess and jealousy which often goes hand in hand with office politics are probably more responsible for ruining colleagues careers because they are looking to advance their own careers.
I don't buy into the presumption that everything is governments fault regardless of where you live. Because we still have power within ourselves and I know there is a force much greater than any human being Our Creator.

Sister Omega,
Some very good and relevant facts are emerging. Your observation that Jammeh himself is a PRODUCT of the past regime is an excellent point to note. The system before Jammeh was equally full of deceit and selfishness. Some ministers were known to be so full of guts they acted more like demi Gods. When Jammeh came up, quite frankly things were bad enough. Jammeh, like everyone else gained their political education from that system. Lot of the people pretending to be with Jammeh today have served in the past regime. It was some of these people who induced Jammeh to act the Big Man. As though a scheme designed to fail Jammeh, the same people made sure Jammeh does not enjoy the full commitment of seasoned professionals. They create barriers. In the process, they (Jammeh's deceivers) swallowing every bit of pride, continue to take advantage and misleading him further and further. It is worrying more than anything that Jammeh lost track and would turn around to unscrew the wrong sides. For now, many of the people around Jammeh are job seekers, simple as that. Some of them like to keep it cool until they get the retirement package. What happens to the country is not their business. This is the sad fact at hand. Others who could make positive difference stand beside looking how far this game of deceit goes. Jammeh needs learning to appreciate that even the most multi-skilled person could not rescue and to sustain a dead system. Yes, there is life needed to enlive the situation. The pain of "monkey work baboon eat" is what is more worrying. If we come to terms with the case that Jammeh is going through an "on-the-job-training", it is not sustainable that a whole government machinery can be accepted on that ticket. Key positions have been filled by Jammeh's army comrades since 1994. The likes of Joseph Jassey who started as Divisional Commissioner (many army guys and APRC are part of this scheme) , then unto some senior admin position, is now full time Permanent Secretary at the President's Office. With due regards his subsequent induction and pursuit of Gambia University programme, Joseph like many others are not thoroughly riped for the sudden rise and sticking to positions requiring much higher skills and beef of experience. So this "on-the-job-training" has wider implications. There are other issues too. Again, the hiring and firing of perceived saboteurs and the replacement with least committed people will continue to undermine Gambia as a nation. Finally, Jammeh needs accepting that he is only one person. Hundreds of thousands are able to combine their efforts in moving the nation. That is not done to please Jammeh or any group of people or ruling party. It is part of historical succession FOR THE GAMBIA OUR HOMELAND. Kobo made the job easier when he encourages us to constantly refer to the Gambia National Anthem. That is good Kobo. |

We'll I suppose in any organisation there are people who have that attitude. It only becomes a problem when they do nothing and get paid for it. That type of dead wood needs to be discarded for new growth to come in to revitalise the system.

This sentence needs to clarified because there has only been two governments in Gambia therefore any other government would be trainees unless made up from previous governments.
Karamba,I agree with you that there are plenty of productive people who are willing and able the work to combine their efforts to develop the nation. I think what is holding Gambia back are the glass ceilings and Jammeh needs to dismantle them to allow more abled people to come through. An Equal opportunities policy or some sort of affirmative action of fairness needs to be considered to weedle out obstructive forces of resistance; to allow aspiring individuals to come through to utilise and transfer their skills into different sectors of the system to stimulate performance across the board both on a national and local level. This negative culture based on badmindness and jealousy needs to be tackled because it just perpetuates negativity and encourages sabotage. Regular assessments of personnel to monitor their performance if certain targets are not met then contracts will be withdrawn after all there is no room for complacency where progress is concerned.

Sister Omega,
Very sound policy instruments there. The "glass shields" are major obstacles between targets and achievements. Naturally the least productive work force feel some inconvenience when sharing jobs with their opposites. This will require a scheme of correction in Gambia. If it is the case that commitment to duty is simply a way of PLEASING THE BOSS and not fulfilling a role, in the absence of the watcher, the doer(s) may fall asleep. As in the common saying: "when the cat is away, the mice will play", this is not only a Gambian problem. In advanced societies too, we have dead woods who pride themselves on being the earlier staff, the natives, the citizens, the favourites. In the case of Gambia, being a PARTY SUPPORTER is way of assuming protection against the waves of job insecurity. That is why even those who don't care about a sitting government or don't know its policies gain access to jobs where under normal occasions, the take is on merit rather than connectivity. But who says, the politics of connectivity is not such common plague even in developed nations ? On your question regarding ...whole government placed "on-the-job-training", this is what it refers to: Soon after the coup, military personnel were quickly placed as Divisional Commissioners. Some of them were placed at top admin positions in the civil service. Some of them took advantage of training opportunities. Others stayed put without being bothered about further capacity building;technical or professional. Slowly melting down in the system, are bunch of APRC supporters and retired army hands who sit on highly demanding job positions without delivering. These are those who keep on being trained "on-the-job", yet they fail to qualify to produce results. A good example is Momodou Soma Jobe whose only qualification to be appointed Dividional Commission is nothing because of his VOCAL manifest of support for President Jammeh. Momodou Soma Jobe was linked to Baba Jobe but quickly abandoned Baba Jobe because Baba's political cloud disappeared in thin air. Jammeh is still keeping Momodou Soma Jobe not based on any merit other than blind support. There is no policy good or development asset in Momodou Soma to warrant his upkeep on that job. Many others are like that. To give them more confidence, president declared over national radio and television that promotion in government service is no longer based on merit but loyalty to him or the APRC. That, Sister Omega, is taking us no further. I am not sure if what you mentioned in your notes are shared by Jammeh or APRC big wigs and patriots. Your concerns are both sound and appropriate, until we see them work in Gambia is something else. |

Well karamba, I hope my words are heeded for the common good because Gambia needs to be more effective and efficient to compete within the Global system. Sometimes things need to be brought into the spotlight to be focused on, and really more focus needs to be done to bring reorientation into reality. Political affiliation or good friendship are not necessatily the most important ingredients in nation building because every citizen needs to be included within the process and tolerance is the glue which holds a nation together. Therefore it is more important that people are judged on their merits. If a patient is undergoing surgery for a major operation. Does the patient ask the Surgent" Are you a APRC Supporter or a UDP Supporter? If you are a UDP Supporter then I did prefer to die than have you operate on me! That would be ridiculus!!!
A Gambian child is brought into a hospital after being knocked down by a heavy goods lorry on Coastal rd, with severe head and abdominal pains. Both parents are avid UDP supporters. Would the parents automatically ask the surgent what political party do you support? Or would they ask the surgeant? Can you save my child's life? These simple questions could be asked as part of an anti discrimination assessment such assessments could assist in reorientation and reconcilation process. In my view the croax of the matter is people should be judged on their merit and not their political affiliations unless they are a major threat to society as a whole advocating extremism i.e facism and genocide etc.

According to current poll updates on the presidential term limit, only 3% of respondents prefer a NO TERMIT LIMIT while about 97% prefer not more than two Five-Year limited term. Precisely, only one person voted for one Five-Year term and the rest generously voted for a whole two terms of Five Years (Total:10 years) Is anyone following the trend? |

Apart from general consensus this is an important part for further in-rooads towards development of Gambian democracy for PEACE, PROGRESS, SUSTAINABILITY & STABILITY. Some are advocating that its not in our constitution which was a deliberate CHOICE to favour the INCUMBENT AND APRC' policy TO ALLWAYS RALLY BEHIND JAMMEH FOREVER & FOREVER??? The Presidential term is one of the FATAL ERRORS OF OMMISIONS, DEFECTS & FLAWS of the consititution amongst others that should warant a REFERANDUM & CONSTITUTIONAL ADMENDMENTS in the interestrs of the NATION and not to pretend that it is not very important ISSUE. To remain as it is FOR FUTURE WHAT (Sister Omega!). Its just ANARCHY if none in authority & politics; especially the LEGISLATURE dare discussed it (Remember with what happened to Sheriff Dibba as speaker when he was fired and made to BEG FOR MERCY TO THE ALMIGHTY!). We cannot wait for Jammeh to capitalise on proposing Constitutional amendmends including this one and take credit for every important landmark for development.
In my opinion its a serious loophole for LIFE PRESIDENCY FOR JAMMEH AND ANARCHY!!
