bbc radio four have a wonderful african drammar about ladies detective agengy . this long run dramma is now going to be in a tv sereis .it is base on a women detectives agency in Bostuwana .they were doing oudition last week but the writer Alexandra Nichol Smith nearly ran into trouble by demanding that he wants the ladies to be ''tradtional african women build ''. even though i like listining to the drammar but featuring ladies with large behinds is not at all educational ,so may be mr Nicholl smith was fantasing about about bustuwana women . but on a plus side the sereia is edutional on radio but on tv ,lets wait and see

Fantastic news - I have read all the books about Mma Ramotswe and her No 1 Ladies Detective agency.
My friend and I were talking about whether this should be made a film. It would be so nice to see a positive story about Africa in the Western cinema.
Lately everything about Africa that is popular here has so much violence: Blood Diamond, Last King of Scotland, Constant Gardener. All good films but it would be nice to see a happy story! |

I wouldn't worry unduly about the BBC being positive, Santanfara ... their dramas hardly ever portray Scottish people as anything other than drunks, violent gang members, etc .... |

African films should be made by Africans. There are film making in Africa but mostly with foreign money. Also African directors base their stories on ”serious” issues. Just look at the films rewarded in this year´s Fespaco Film Festival in Burkina Faso; ”Ezra” from Nigeria is about life of a child solder in Sierra Leone, ”Les Saignates” from Cameron is a sciens-fiction about two prostitutes and ”Daratt” has revenge as a theme. The film ”Africa Paradise” was also rewarded and has an interesting theme; in the near future white Europeans are them who are desperately wanting to come to the United States of Africa. As they are denied visa, they rent small boats and then have to work as maids and street cleaners. I am very much looking forward to seeing it!
As cinemas are rare in many African countries African films are not watched by many. The new technique, digital media is a possibility To make DVD-copies is cheap compared with 35 mm reels which are very expensive both to make and distribute.
The only ”gay” (joyful) film I have watched is ”Karmen Gei” directed by Joseph Gai Ramaka, the first ever African version based on Bizet´s famous opera ”Carmen”. but it is setted in contemporary Senegal with a lot of music and dance. Te original music is replaced with indigenous music by Dodou N´Diaye Rose and El Hadj N´Diaye. Djeinaba Diop Gai is just gorgeous as Karmen!

Uuuh, kiwi, I googled 'Karmen Gei' and found it was a big scandal in Senegal. In this film Karmen is bisexual, and from the photos you can see that she likes to show her beautiful legs. The Mourides took offence, and they are very influential in Senegal.
It is true, most western films about Africa show only the negative sides. I prefer watching African films as long as they don't imitate US gangster movies, like certain Nigerian productions. Like Senegal, Burkina Faso has some very good film directors.
Oh yes, and I read one of the Mma Ramotswe books - nice story! |

I watched a documentary the other day about the Nigerian film industry. I was very surprised to learn that it is the 3rd largest after Bollywood and Hollywood in terms of numbers of employees and turnover. The difference is I think that most films are distributed on DVD.
Ps I think there should be more "traditional" build women on TV and cinema as there is already an imbalance towards the skinny. |
