I am going to leave my judgement on the parents leaving their children until this tragic situation has come to a conclusion. There is enough going on without the blame culture rearing its head again instead of getting on with the business of finding what happened to the little girl.
There are many children left in their beds on compounds with parents sitting outside the compound in The Gambia-
Children play in the Street - It seems very safe.
Sometimes a false sense of security is had when visitng abroad. Our perceptions and instincts and gut feelings are put on hold more often than they ought to be.

The bottom line is children SHOULD be safe. Sadly in our world they arent always.
The incidents of children being snatched by strangers is very rare indeed. Sadly children are often abused by someone they know and even their own blood relatives.
I wonder in Gambia does this happen, but not get spoken about? In UK it wasnt spoken about 50 years ago and now cases come to light.
Or does the fear of Allah keep such behaviour in check?
The generally held belief is that a certain percentage of men IN ANY COUNTRY will be abusers of children. It is part of their genetic make up. But then on top of that there are culutral influences and social influences. I do feel that the internet opens up images to people that look at pornography that may fed a latent need. Does looking at these images make them more likely to act or less likely? i'm not sure? Many 'respectable' men look at such sites in europe and USA. |

There is speculation in the papers in Uk that Maddy may have been trafficked to Northern Africa. There was a possible sighting at a Marina in Portugal on the night she was snatched. Then another possible sighting in Morroco.
From Northern Africa where would a young white girl be trafficked to and for what purpose? Is this a known route or is it very rare?
Anyone from bantaba in Morroco or travelling there for holidays please take the poster with you.
She may have been moved on further or it may be a false sighting, but it is hope that she is still alive. |

When I went home to Leicester last weekend the story of Maddy was still dominating the news. People in Leicestershire are buying wrist bands from the local paper (Leicester Mercury) to give money to the fighting fund to get Maddy back. The paper have bought them from a fairly local company and the company have made them for cost.All donations go directly to the fund.
I cant imagine how the parents must be feeling. Their friends and family are proving to be incredibly resourceful, but the story is fading slowly in the news inspite of their best efforts.
Until she is found we must try to be positive and keep the story alive. |

Why would you be so defensive on their behalf
Ofcourse very few people made this suggestion but it could be very possible. The fact is, their sort of behaviour tells a very different story or could it be that they are just different. |

They are from a village in Leicestershire and the case has had a very high profile in Leicester. He is a specialist at Glenfield hosptial and she is a doctor in a local practice. They have been provided with testamonies by many people. Furthermore the police say they arent suspects. When you see them with their other children they are loving parents. Why would they do something to their own daughter?
SOMETIMES this happens in families it is true, but it is usually a step dad or an uncle or similar. It's very rare for a mother to hurt her own child. |

WHY WOULD THEY LEAVE ALL THREE CHILDREN TO GO AND HAVE A MEAL EACH EVENING?????? I read in a Dutch newspaper that the father had been asked about this and he said it was like dining in your garden while your children slept .... but looking at the map of where this restaurant was in relation to the hotel room I can only conclude that their garden must be the size of a city park!!!! What bulls**t (apologies for my language but I'm sooooooooooooo enraged here)!!
Your reasoning is flawed, Bev, just like you! But then why should anyone take notice of anything you say after you (a mother yourself?!) openly admit to leading an 4 year old girl into a circumcision 'ceremony'. You disgust me as much as the McCanns do. How can you sleep at night? |

I have nothing but sympathy for the Mc Canns. To have their daughter abducted in this way is terrible.
Remember FGM is not MY tradition, it is an African tradition. I have written about it before and when I came back from the trip I wrote a journal that was on bantaba about my experience at the time.
This little girl is just one of many many thousands if not millions that it happends to. If you feel strongly against it vent your anger at the elders that allow it to happen, the women that perform the cut and the mothers that allow it to happen to their daughters. I was an observer that got put in an impossible position. It was going to happen to the girl whatver I did. I could have walked away. Then I would have felt I abandoned her. As it was I sat with her and nursed her until they led her away. It was one of the most difficult days of my life. Pirang is a mainly Mandika village. The people follow the traditional ways. This girl would have been outcast if she didnt have it done.
The way to change things is through political pressure and education within the country. Chaning the hearts and minds of the mothers, so they dont want it to happen to their daughters.

It may not happen everyday that parents killed their own children (or who knows? maybe it does happen everyday), but we have heard of people who have done it before so it is not impossible that Maddys parents may be involved. I hope not, but it can be so.
