Tribalism; Racism, or ethnocentrism are very sensitive topics for discussion in any society. They are hardly seen in the public arena, but looking into patterns of government appointments, services distributions and treatment of individuals can lead to a discovery element of this distasteful social practice.

As in any society, people need to openly discuss such topics in other to eliminate the practices and defuse the risks that comes with it.

An interesting discussion has been started by one Momodou L. Drammeh acusing Mathew Jallow of tribal sentiments. Please click on the link below to read...

It takes pain to put sense together. On that note, it is only fair that we thank Mathew K Jallow for his simplicity and clarity in exposing the tribal drift of Jammeh. The appointment and retention of Isatou Njie and others who are not Jola only goes to show how Jammeh thinks he is able to fool Gambians. Now his true colours are showing clear. Let Gambians not make mistake about this. There is a real tribal fight being spear-headed by Jammeh. President Wadda of Senegal knows this and so too many non-Jola Gambians. Not only is Jammeh transplanting Jolas in all government positions, he is infusing the Jolas from Cassamance in a more cunning way. People in the army know this. Mathew K Jallow is quite an intellectual to make mistakes of raising the issue of tribalism if it was not on. What we notice in this forum and elsewhere is that the Jola biased contributors are very sensitive about any mention of Jammeh's tribal sentiments. They use all covers to disguise. The truth is that Jammeh is advancing the tribal divide between Jolas and others in Gambia. Anyone who fails to pick this up is a self deceiving person. On personal note, I feel there are more serious NATIONAL ISSUES than this petty tribal thing. Since Jammeh commands our resources and is ready to blow them on lavish Jola entertainment and enrichment, it becomes a national concern to discuss and terminate the ugly head of tribalism manifested by a biased president. Jammeh is all out to create a Jola dominated Gambia.

Thats not an issue. Every gambian knows about that only the fools will not accept that. The public sector is JOla dominated-not that jolas are the majority but the key positions.

Brother Salmina,

I am not sure if what you noted is what I did too. Please help me to understand if we are not on the same wing. Thank you.

Thank you Brother Salmina,

From start, Jammeh did not hide his tribal bias. He insulted the Jolas for serving as watchmen and maids; something he regretted. His current move is to show other tribes in Gambia that he is Jola, and king pf other tribes. Jammeh is not cultured for decent dispensation of presidential duties. He instead sees only the tyrany of presidency. Too sad for Gambians.

I think some of us have a very short memory span. Not so long ago, the most subjugated and looked down enthic group in the Gambia were the Jolas. The word "Jola" was synonymous with maids. Now the shoe is on the other foot some of us are crying foul. What happened to "do on to others as you would like others to do on to you"...or yet still "what goes around comes around."

We all agree that the man is tyrant, but he has a mandate and not Jolas voted for him. I think we are better served at turning our energies to something else that continuing to beat a dead horse.

mansasulu,
I share your opinion. I think it is better to look into how we can bring remedies to these problems. The Jolas and Serer have been serving as servants in the Gambia for a long time now. I think it is time we stop the exploitation of these people. They need proper salaries and good working conditions. When I grew up many Jola Girls went pregnant by their manters, masters children or somebody else without taking care of these children. Most of them are now in their 50s. There are even older ones but they all keep quite about it. Now is the time to adjust things to the proper maner.

Mansasulu,

No one one crying foul because the president is a jola.I have a strong relationship with Jolas from both angles but that will not stop me from admitting the facts. What the president is doing right now is just alienating the Jolas from mainstreams. If such a trend( appointing jolas in every sensitive position) continues, the jolas will be victims and alienated when the change of government arrives.

These are facts which ever angle you looked at.
