As individuals we are surely powerless but with unity we can amass enough power to make a difference. The conditions in our homeland exist due to in action from its decent citizens. So who should we blame? You and I. Mark my words as long as we choose to be internet heroes APRC will continue ruling with a mandate from Gambians.
Gambians do not have an alternative and as long as that void exists, they will continue to vote for APRC.
Our home land is practically a one party state; the ruling party has control over all the resources and hence the lively hood of many depend on either working for the Government or remittance form a Diaspora that fails to see its potential. The choices for Gambians are put up with what is happening or shut up. The Diaspora is the last line of defense, unless we elect to provide an option that can counter the weight of the ruling party the status quo will continue.
By the way throwing cheap political jabs at the present administration on the internet will not cut the mustard.

Ebou4th,

There is complete sense in your views. I need add that what we post on internet sites is more powerful than the guns that Jammeh keeps in Kanilai. In the absence of a systematic study, it is hard to confirm the impact of all that flows from cyberspace. Certainly there is ample impact you and me knowing it or not. Why do you think the Jammeh government is holding Fatou Jaw Manneh, and still in the hunt for others? Jammeh is more worried about what is coming from internet sites than what Darbo, Juwara, and Sallah put together in their public rallies. In ten meetings, the opposition in Gambia repeat one and the same message. Over the internet, more than ten messages are posted daily. These slots of information stay in space longer than the memory held for ten meetings in Gambia. Please don't stop. Without the internet, Jammeh would not have been so severely exposed. Anyone who dares to write a hand-delivery letter to Jammeh in Kanilai risks an encounter with the wild crocodiles of Jammeh's zoo. In the next minute after striking my "enter" key, this message you are reading is being read by Jammeh and his people. Yes, Ebou4th, the internet is powerful and we are not cyber heroes but real change agents.

Karamba, while I agree that information is a powerful change agent, I hold the notion that it needs to be complimented by action. How long have Gambians in the Diaspora been on the internet posting comments about the APRC administration? Did the effects of pressure from the internet cause any changes? The power of the information age should be used to unite a Diaspora that is willing to put their resources where their mouths are. I believe this is the only way we can bring about change. Unless and until we do that, I am afraid Sister Kobo's assertion will continue to be true.
The Diaspora will continue sending money to the Gambia for our families to survive and APRC will continue to rule with a mandate. The APRC administration may not see the Diaspora as partners in development but the administration knows that is our remittance that is keeping the economy of our mother land afloat. I say take it one notch higher, unite your resources and start making a difference in the lives of the everyday Gambian, give them an alternative to the current administration, the Gambia’s political culture has been what can Mr. X do for me. If Mr. Jammeh is doing for them then unless and until we provide a Mr/Mrs. Y they will continue to vote for Mr Jammeh.
The task we have ahead is not only about disagreeing with APRC, it is far larger than that, we need to enlighten the citizenry; most Gambian voters do not know the value of their votes. Guess what if APRC is not in the political seen some one else will be running the show. The solution to our problem is an enlightened citizenry. We need to empower our countrymen and women by teaching them about the power of their votes, give them options, make a difference in there everyday lives.
A mature democratic system that ensures peace,

Ebou4,

If it was a matter of paying for a unit of valuable information, I would have yours bought at wholesale. The fact that we are sharing these views is a good bit of the process you referred as the need to produce an enlightened citizenry. Slow as it appears to be like a moving moon, we are certainly getting there. By all practical consideration, the remittance from Diaspora Gambians is a huge weight in the national economic basket of values. While this is done at individual basis, it is still a massive contribution. A way of looking at it is that all those who make such remittance to families back home have opportunity to extend serious personal messages about the need to alter the system of rule currently prevailing in Gambia. Less about Jammeh having to go. He already cultivated a dangerous system which deeply eats into the vital fabric of society in variety of ways. We have to restore normal life in Gambia. We have to grow hate for abnormal life as perpetrated by bandits who want us to accept them as genuine politicians when we know they are not. The action you referred to can be in the way we all relate. It may not be a wild confrontation with such brutal force as Jammeh's APRC Gambia. It is by way of strategic concensus. I hear some people in the Diaspora say that with their money and cars, they are OK back home. Don't they need knowing that when Jammeh destroys the economy and morgages the security system, not even Bill Gates is able to enjoy if he were to be Gambian back home. Jammeh will be the last person to strike fire power in Gambia knowing that means his unceremonious exit. Yet he keeps a bunker of arms to impress on us that he is ready to set fire when we dare reach for him. We can resort to the strategy of each-one-teach-one. Jammeh does not have the required wisdom to baffle a whole nation. What he is doing currently is an aspect of his low sense of both morarility and and level of maturity. He is like a greedy bully who takes food from weaker members of a group and boasts of being great!! These bits of information we all share over here and other sites is helping to cement us further. It helps us to appreciate the suffering that senseless beings impose on innocent civilised society. When we get rid of Jammeh, nothing of such bad environment can stay behind. It is a total flush down of the whole container and all contents. Again, I wish to maintain that we are advancing even though it is not by way of physical action. That is what Jammeh is playing to prompt us as a society so that he finds an exit to allow one of his gang members step in the dirty boots he currently stamps on us. Keep the information flow to end of the tunnel. There is sufficient light ahead.

Karamba, service to the nation is both a responsibility and an honor for every citizen presented with the opportunity, thanks for your tireless effort and I slaute your patriotism. While I agree with you on most accounts, I do not think the internet is the most effective method to enlighten the Gambian electrolate. How many everyday Gambians have access to the internet? My guess is not many.
The in action on the part of the Diaspora is a bitter pill that we have to swallow.
Sister kobo said "I can only say that THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE PATRIOT AND ONLY ONE MAN ABOVE THE RULE OF LAW SADDLY FOR OUR GAMBIA OUR HOMELAND! The REST OF US ARE ALL FOOLS AND POWERLESS! ONE MAN RULES AND AUTORITATIVELY WHETHER ONE LIKES IT OR NOT! Food for thoughts!"
If we think APRC administration is afraid of the cheap political jabs that most Gambians in the Diaspora throw at them we are fooling ourselves. We can use the power of the internet to unite us, but we cannot expect posting blogs some of which are not true will cause change. Get real!
One way we can command respect is to join forces, start foundations/ projects that will make a difference in the lives of the everyday Gambian, this will counter the mass resources and the choke hold that the current administraton has on our people back home. The current administrtion has a lot of short comings to say the least but it has delivered. We cannot expect the voters to vote for an opossition that does not have its act together.
The Gambians do not have an alternative, the Diaspora needs to fill that void.
Peace be onto my brother.

This is an interesting discourse. I think both Karamba and Ebou4th are onto something relevant here.
It is true that "the pen is mightier than the sword". the problem here though is that Gambians in the diaspora constitute a small group that largely does not vote , and while our cyber-contributions of ideas is extremely important it reaches a very small reading audience in the Gambia. The majority of the Gambian people who go to the polls do not read and do not share(or understand) our ideals of government and economics. Freud may again be right that "man is an irrational being".
The glorious ideas coming from the diaspora might be crucial but any real change in the Gambia , political or otherwise, must come from within. The majority of Gambians must develop modern political thinking and conciousness in order to bring about any meaningful change in government. This may still take some time unfortunately , but that should be no cause for despair , we must keep talking and writing until...
