7th anniversary when students and a Red Cross worker were shot and killed with live ammunitions in broad day light by the very people who were supposed to protect them. They were massacred in cold blood by the security forces for demonstrating against the rape of a school girl Binta Manneh and the tragic death of another student Ebrima Barry.

You can do search here, plus on the old bantaba - by typing in appropriate words & Omar Barrow - Red Cross/journalist Or, http://www.amnesty.org/ then library > Documents by region/Gambia - then go to 12/4/2000, be prepared for a shock to the amount of filed cases.

Remyspam, alternatively 'Google' Omar's name - where you will find thousands of hits/information on the distressing massacre.

Let's make April a whole month of mourning. Send Sympathy Cards/E-cards to all Gambian Embassies, State House Websites, Lobby Sites, Office of President Banjul, all accessible websites. Also to every Embassy in Gambia, Us Embassy, UK Embassy and others. This can be kept as a live message reminder from this April onwards. The brutal killing of innocent students could not be brushed under any thick carpet of a dictatorial regime. The act is low and deserves being denounced even long after Jammeh is unseated. |

Remyspam,
it is possible to have former GAMSU (GAMBIA STUDENT UNION) leader, Omar Joof or any of his mates to be our guest on that day. we are working towards that.

mou you are invaluable to us in the bantaba. keep it up. some gambians only strive on just one front and leave rather unattractive topic to others , i believe this is not a healthy way forward. |

Once again, we send our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic event of our history. May their souls rest in peace and haunt those who perpetuated the crime. It’s a shame that all those who could have been prosecuted for this crime were indemnified by an act enacted by the National Assembly and back dated.
The ”Indemnity Amendment Act” was enacted by the National Assembly and assented to by the President of the Republic of The Gambia on 2nd May 2001. It became Act No. 5 of 2001. Section 1 of the amending Act (Act No. 5 of 2001) provides that the Act "shall be deemed to have come into force on 1st January 2000."
Act No. 5 of 2001 indemnifies public officers and state agents against all claims in respect of actions undertaken during any period of public emergency, public disturbance or riotous situation. |
