this topic has been done to death, bumsters are okay but again i ask why the rudeness, if you are firm they will go away but why are they chasing me in the first place. if you go by palma rima come out of the main gate turn leift and walk down the road to the beach it can be intimidating waling down that road they are quite ruthless.n secondly are they all gambian, i think not some are from other countries, so what started out as a why for gambian youth to make money as guides is now exploited by soldiers who let them into the tourist areas for a fee and by other non gambians who are looking to make a quick dls. |

| Whatever you say about the "Bumster" postings, at least its the only original and interesting posting at the moment, all the rest are just repeats of what we can all read, from the Newspaper reports!! |

Be fair,Gambia is only a small country and if you are not in the country to get news about what is REALLY going on must be difficult, how about an interesting topic from yourself? |

Tintinto, I can’t help you if you read Foroyaa Newspaper Burning issues somewhere else. No one is forcing you to read them twice if you’ve already done so.
By the way, is it only the British who feel bothered by the Bumsters in the Gambia? Scandinavians are more popular and I personally rarely hear them complain about Bumsters. Perhaps they see them as part of a tourist industry.

They are perhaps more popular because they are richer!
The main complaints I heard from people that are tourists, whatever the country are as follows:
1. Bumsters 2. Lack of vegetarian food in the hotels 3. Bartering being a hassle. Would rather have fixed prices. 4. Want to visit inland, but not sure where to go or who to go with. 5. Uncertainity about safety outside of hotel/beach area.
My main advice would be to ignore the tour company trying to get you to stay inside the hotel. If you are sensible then you will be safe in Gambia.
Vegetarian food is on menus outside of hotels and if you ask most places will make you something.
Bartering. Think of what something would cost you at home. Think of how much you want something. Decide on a price. Offer half of that. Then gradually work towards what you are prepared to pay. If you pay a bit extra consider it a tip, you are still paying less than at home. Dont go shopping when you are stressed or pressed for time. It should be sociable and fun, you are on holiday!
Inland...go to Brikama to the wood market, to Brufut and sanyang, to Gunjur to the ecolodge, to the museum at Tange.
Tendaba is my favourite place on earth and I would recommend any western tourist make the trip to look at the stars and experience the stillness.
If you go to Tendaba call at Kwinella nursery school on your way. Please take pencils and paper etc///clothes for young children. Anything will be really appreciated.
Safety...as a tourist I have always felt safe. There are two sets of rules, one for tourists and one for locals. The locals are in danger from the police and government, but tourists are ok. I find Gambian men to be very gentlemenly and feel safer than in UK.... But be warned about imigrants to Gambia, they dont all act the same as Gambians. I have been threatened by a Nigerian man. And other people report incidents with other non Gambians.
Remember you are in a Muslim country and act accordingly. DOnt do daft things that you wouldnt do at home. Keep safe! |

Maybe British people have this attitude that its their right to complain about EVERYTHING Kind of like they still own something everywhere On my last visite I stayed at very cheap hotel since we all are not that rich or maybe prefer using our money to something more important...and there was a british lady who kept complaining about her room and demanded to change it three times within 24 hours...the sink was not straight, the madrass was too hard, the pillow was too hard, the neibouroughs too noisy (british/gambian couple arguing all the time)and blaa blaa blaa. All the rooms are like that and the price is good so what is there to complain about? She also made some comments about bumsters and how they were bothering her all the time..and how women came to Gambia for sex, which she made to sound like she was the only one who didn´t...but she did not understand that she was bothering everybody, all guests and stuff at hotel because she kept moving from one to the other and sat down for hours and bla bla all the time...later on she moved her ass to my closest neibourghous and had some wine and beer with them and late at night I heard her talking about sex, flirting with this norvegian man (his wife was there) and really making juicy jokes about sex...I found her worse than any bumster ever...
Bumsters can be annoying sometimes but still I try to think that they are just trying to make their living. Some of them are really good guides and they are not forcing themselves on anyone. I prefer using my money in local business and that is how I see them. And since everybody working with tourists are trying to look after themselves and make some extra out of it, why go on and critizise the ones that have no change to get imployment inside of hotels and restaurangs? |

I my experience of the hotel trade Americans and Germans (in general) complain the most! Much more than the average Brit.
There is a sayig in life that you get what you pay for. If youa re staying in a budget hotel in a developing country then you shouldnt expect luxury! Relax, get into Gambian time and enjoy the difference! |

plus may i add, every bumster we have ever met (and believe me we have met a lot) ALWAYS comes out with the same line "we like the english, we dont like the germans, we call them muscle heads, they are very arrogant .....and guess what they will be saying exactly the same things to our german friends about the british. (yes the bumsters know exactly what they are doing)
Inez, that women must have been a nightmare(ive met some horrible british people as well)...but pls dont use it as an excuse to make snide remarks about the british ie "Kind of like they still own something everywhere".
I have met lovely people from all nationalities. On holiday in Turkey, german ground crew (30 of them)stayed at our hotel, and one night my partner and I went out for a drink with them...we had a brilliant time. (the holiday was boring up until then). My dad has served in the Norweigen merchant navy(hope the spelling is right), and always speaks highly of the norweigens..he says they are a lovely race of people. I could go on and on...but i wont bore you.
people stop generalising.....such negativity |
