I have resontly returned from the Gambia, i have been going for some 15 years, for the first time for a very long time i stopped in the tourist area (Kololi). the reason for this was that i had brought 2 friends over with me this time to introduce them to the country. I was amazed and annoyed to find how time seems to have stood still regarding the "Bumster" problem. My one friend has to a "doctorate" in Phycollegy" and another in "Enginnering", the other is incharge of a Cadburys factory over 1,200 people. so they really do not need nurse maiding, by several "Bumsters" at one time as soon as they come out of the hotel, being told were to Change money, eat,etc.... just to wonder what others think of this situation, as i have been told by both friends, that they like the country, but would not return because of the "Bumsters"... Shame for all of us that love the gambia!!!!

| WAGI,this topic has been raise over and over again.Bumsters are pain in the ass who hassle tourist day and night while they are on holiday,which is not nice.On the other hand the Bumsters are youths that cannot find work and see no way out other than bumsing.WAs TINTIN not a bumster oh lol,he got many cars with number plate TINTIN 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, and 10.He's done a good job inother to have 10 cars by bumsting. |

| I would suggest staying in Kotu, its more beautiful and bumsters are less of a problem. |

if they go back to gambia that is, bumsters are a problem and an acknowledged one, tintinto brought two friends to a tourist area who have said they would not return because of the bumsters, i bet they tell there friends this tale. it is a shame for Gambia. two lost returnee tourists, this month could be equal to many more in the next 12 months.

| jambo, i met these 2 gentlemen through a "Networking" club,mostly consisting of retired (some early) members, they all have time and money to do what they want. Last night, the club had a meet, and my 2 friends were indeed telling the rest of the club, "In Gambia beware of the Bumsters"!!!! |

Point of correction! Its not Gambia's shame but the Bumsters'. Lets put things in their right perspective. Wat can the Gov't do, to youths whose only dream is going to Europe by any means possible? The serious ones have been co-opted into the official guides. There are some tourists who like it 'dirty' and prefer these bumsters or beach boys to official guide. It TAKES TWO TO TANGO |

Interesting article, sab.
He points out some very interesting things and gives some good alternatives as well.
The only thing that bothers me, but this could also be my ignorance, is that quite a lot of people (in The Gambia and on this forum) see Jammeh as a big part of the problem (or at least, not a part of the solution).
Is The Gambia so tied up (mentally, entrepeneurially or economically) that it's hard for people to independently, no matter the political situation, create (business-)oppertunities for the people?
Mind you, I've only been in The Gambia once, I come from Holland.
But even though I've got quite a good view on the political situation, it seems to me that The Gambian people let their head down quickly because of the Jammeh-situation so that it partially paralyses the country?
There must be some parapolitical means to lift the country to a more deserved spot in the developed country charts? |

| Madiba, Yes i am British, but spent my early years working instead of schooling, so that in later years, i could have the money to go to Gambia, whenever i like, and employ dozens of Gambians, to help there lives. how many do you employ? |

Tintinto, i am very happy that you replied well. I am living in UK for some time now, your case is not an isolated one. I have worked with brits who never saw the gate of a collge much more a university. These guys work hard to make ends meet.Your case should serve as inspiration to these bumsters. Most of these youths have not completed secondary school, some stopped at primary school and don't want to take up a trade. Your employment of gambians is highly welcomed. I have given employment to Gambians before i came here, i have paid tuition fees for gambians just to name a few. It may interest you to know some of these beneficiaries are not even relatives. Thanks Tint and keep it up! |

| its really sad if so educated people canīt see the reasons to bumstering and have some understanding. maybe gambia loose nothing if those "gentlemen" donīt come back since they are obviously the kind of tourists that prefer their afternoon tea in five star hotel with all inclusive..and what does that do for gambias developement? |

| Its not so much that educated people dont understand why "Bumsters" exist, i can see it!!! and i can't stand them. More what it is, the rubbish they come out with, they just may as well say "Oh toubab you jus come out of the hotel, an ur a lost child,we will help u"!!! WHEN U SAY THAT TO INTELIGENT PEOPLE, ITS TAKING THE P. 1 55!!!!! |
