Gentlement we all continue to yearn for a free and better Gambia, i just want to remind all the road looks bleak but promising. we will succced. I have gone silence but not silence, i continue to fight for our course, and i have no doubt we will succeed. I have enclose a letter written to house of common foreign affairs committee and human rights committee. To my surprise i got a reply from the human rights committee saying they only consider human rights issue within uk. Lets keep it up guys, we will win the moral war. I have not doubt at all.
(Address remove) 06th December 2005
Dear Hon Members,
I am a Gambian, a citizen of the Commonwealth, and want to bring to your attention the current fragile political situation in my beloved country. I wish to solicit your support to secure the immediate and unconditional release of the three opposition leaders of the National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD).
On 15th November, 2005, The Gambian government arrested three opposition political leaders, namely, Hon. Halifah Sallah, Mr. Hamat Bah, and Mr. Omar Jallow. Hon Sallah is the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Parliament; a member of the African parliament and Co-ordinator of NADD. He is a distinguished, honest, informed and selfless leader; a model for democratic leadership in Africa . These arrests confirm President Jammeh's attempts to silence legitimate democratic political opposition by all means, as follows:-
¨ During the recent by-election, President Jammeh, publicly stated that Hon. Sallah should not be in Parliament. However, the people of Sallah's constituency stood by him and elected him again, against Jammeh's wishes.
¨ In a recent speech to religious leaders President Jammeh accused the opposition of fermenting bitterness between The Gambia and her sister country, Senegal, without providing any evidence. He vowed to imprison those in the opposition for being "not patriotic", so one is saddened but not surprised at the recent events.
¨ It was NADD's aim to launch the party nationwide during this month. It is obvious therefore that the current regime have carried out these arrests in an attempt to suppress the alliance.
¨ Last week, the Inspector General of Police refused to grant NADD permission for the use of a public address system at a rally, citing security reasons. However, a similar gathering organised by the ruling party in the same week was allowed to proceed.
¨ In another attempt to tarnish Hon Sallah's image the state media (radio and TV) made a public announcement stating that he was still at large but hiding when in fact he had been arrested by National Intelligence Agency officials.
¨ Many opposition sympathisers working within the civil service have recently been sacked.
It is quite clear that the state machinery is being used at all levels to silence and oppress the opposition's view and indeed the views of the people.
Civilised societies like yours value democracy, rule of law and the opportunity for every soceity to pursue freedom and right self-determination. As a Gambian, I strongly believe that there is no better time for you to make it known to President Jammeh that the people of Gambia deserve decent treatment and that freedom is not a privilege but a right for all for enjoy.
Many Gambians including myself are saddened that the Commonwealth Summit made no mention of the fragile political situation in Gambia or that its opposition leaders were languishing in prison without charge but instead choose to maintain status quo on a President Jammeh, who has in recent years become one of Africa's richest men while the people are getting poorer.
As Gambians we will stand peacefully for our freedom and liberty against tyranny and the degrading treatment by our self appointed leader and I ask that all peace loving people of the world speak against tranny.
Mahatma Gandhi said, "None co-operation with evil is as much a moral obligation as co-operation with good ".
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Adama

Patriotic move, and keep it flowing ! These are the voices of free people. Our brothers and siters don't have it at home. We do. We should be proud of it, and utilise it to the fullest.
I admire the letter, and welcome back- good silence breaking with that powerful dispersement. The time on that letter will never be a waste.

But why should YOU believe that the British who DO NOT practice democracy themselves, or the Americans who are outrageously undemocratic and dictatorial, should consider sorting out Gambia? If there ios a problem in Gambia, let the Gambian people sort it out ... not so-called democratic countries with hands drenched in blood. peace.

Gentleman, in an ideal world, i would not argue to the contrary, but we are not in an ideal world therefore its not moral decadency that we relie on the west for such fundamental issues as our freedom. Rather its moral decadency on our leadership because they would listen to Britain or US than they would to their own people. We should never be ashame of the truth rather we should be ashame of our leadership. When the horizon is so bleak as it is at the moment, one has to explore every peaceful means to excert pressure on dictators, as least that is my believe. Keep the peace

I wouldnt disagree either in an ideal world but this world is far from ideal. Id just like to add something to this debate. My country has a history of infighting, fighting with Britain and being so poor we couldnt afford shoes on our feet. Along the way to ultimate freedom (if thats what its called) we enlisted the help of the US,at a price I must admit, and have now become prosperous. Perhaps Africa in general can learn from the global examples and not rely totally on themselves. Certainly in my experience if the people in Gambia are faced with making their own decisions, then they will pay the consequence. Its never a good idea to stick your head in the sand. On another issue...Can anyone tell me exactly what wealth Yammeh has???.....Where is the evidence?

Dave, sometimes I fine it difficult to understand the rationale in your statements or questions, firstly you asked, where is Jammeh's wealth? it is not rocket science to know the amount of wealth that Jammeh has over the past few years to becoming Gambia's riches man, if you might think this is an insertions, i challenge you to visit Jammeh's home village. Its very sad, really sad that folks like you often try to muddy the waters in debates. How do you think Gambia and Gambians could copy your country? Wake up one morning and start working hard .... that is not far from an insult to ordinary folks, working 365days in year trying to make a living and pay taxes to keep people like Jammeh in 40 cars motorcade running around the country like maniacs. Do you see my point? keep the peace

Thanks Somita. My point simply is that US and UK cannot be trusted. Period. Today 17/12/2005 we hear a scandal in UK where their NIA (Special Branch) FRAMED the Irish and brought down the PEACE GOVERNMENT last year!!! Can you believe that the BRITISH would undermine PEACE in their own country? After so many innocent civilians died over the years from bombings? So what makes us think that the British Government or the US Government gives a hoot about ORDINARY people? Look at Serbia, Kosovo, Iraq, Palestine, Rusiia, etc. ORDINARY people SUFFER from Western Liberation - full stop. Peace.

Very right gentleman, i strongly support your point, i think its a valid point however this is a soceity where perceived view is valued, not for the good of humanity, but to be seen to be doing good for their personal ends. Which is what might happen in our case. I dont think for any moment they would intervane but since its going to cost me next to nothing to send them an email, I might as well just try. The general fact is we live in a sad, pathetic, unbalance world.
