Hello,

Can somebody tell me in what kind of jobs are available for somebody moving from The Gambia to Europe?(After learning the language of the country)

Also advice to increase chances to find a good job, or tips which make it easier to get acces to jobs (specific educations, ...)

Thanks in advance!

It really depends on your qualifications and your papers...

What do you do now?

Hi yalika where are you headed? Have you finished school?

What type job are you looking for? What type of qualifications and experience do you have? Have you got a work permit or a Student visa and some where to stay in Europe, enough money for living expenses? Can you support yourself whilst finding employment? Have you got enough money for you student fees?

These are the types of questions you will need to answer when considering coming to Europe. Also use the net to find out about European Countries. Also find a safe means of travel to Europe. Please don't be tempted into being trafficked here, it may cost your life and it's just not worth it! my sister.

If you have time look at some of the articles on the forum about the consequences of using illegal boats to come to Europe. My best advise for you is to plan your journey by well and travel by plane. Stay in school and get the relevant qualifications you may need to get a job in Europe. You can look at jobsites on the internet to see what employees are looking for. Just write in google the types of jobs you are looking for. Just a word of advice, if someone offers you work for a lot money in Europe which seems to good to be true it probably is.

Yalika there are stories on the forum of young girl's who have been forced into Prostitution without them knowing it to be, until they get here. Just be careful. I wish you all the best.

If you have further questions feel free to ask.

Peace

I just want to know the chances/experiences for a Gambian in Europe (dont't get me wrong, coming to Europe will happen in a completely legal way)
Like most Gambians with an education up to 16 years old, so reading and writing and counting is not a problem, but apart from English the knowledge of other (European) languages is not there. The further studies of tourism are of no use in Europe I suppose.

So I want to know maybe some of you followed a further (practical) education here, to be able to get acces to a job. For example like a cook in a restaurant or working in a bakery, ...

thanks

There are courses avalibale in leisure and Tourism. Here is a job link that you might find useful http://www.reed.co.uk/to give you a taste of what types of jobs are available in the UK job market.

Mbay, New Immigration Rules from 1st Jan 07 - should you want a settlement visa you are required to have good command of English Language and you take a test on the history of UK. Not much info has filtered out yet!
When I read yalika first posting I thought the language test was being referred to, I now see this is not the case.

Yalika,
I don't know if this will help as it applies to America and not Europe, but here in America most of the Gambians I know pursuse the field of health care. I think it doesn't take too much time to take a few short courses to become a nurse's aide to begin. Then some go on to become a full nurse, etc. In America this is a job where you can make decent money (quite a bit better than some minimum wage job), and the work is not too back-breaking. Hope this will be of some use. Why not consider America since you know English so well? ;)

Hello Yalika,
Are you trying to help someone or is it about yourself? Do you live in Gambia or outside?

if you are thinking of the UK, i would suggest you arm yourself with soe basic knowledge of skills, could you take a typing course, basic teaching course, learn computers at least basic level. something to have that is transferrable. if you come to the uk without someithing you could end up sweeping the streets, being a hospital porter or stacking shelves. jobs that are unskilled, but even these will be in short supply now that uk is open to more eastern european countries.

Jambo that's very true. Even people who are hospital porters, taxi drivers, and road sweepers have degrees but can't get jobs for what they were educated in.

Thank you very much all, it was not for myself but for my boyfriend.

Before deciding anything we need to consider everything carefully and have as much information as possible, and I received valuable tips here!

The country in Europe I am currently living in is Belgium.

Thanks again
