Isn't she?
I absolutley agree. I love going to The Gambia and have many very good friends (off again at the end of March, counting the days - and the bank balance!!). Of course I help where I can - but, like Beve, try to explain that I'm not a rich person in my own country...
Anyway - am trying now, with the help of friends and colleagues, to set up a small business loan system. So we lend money (after having seen a business palna and after having discussed the idea.) It's returnable, with no interest, over x number of years (and this can be reviewed).
It seems to be working (though it's still very small scale). Friends have a chance and then I get some money back to lend out again.......

sister omega, if i had land i would feel secure but i would d something with the land, let us get this into context.
i have a need for food, but do not have the need for the best food everyday.
electricity definately, but if there was an alternate light source i might consider it.
in Gambia as other have pointed out, we support families there, and it nevers seems enough, this year i have put my foot down on the help i give because it doesn't seemto stop. i know things are hard there, but its always a roof, school fees, money for this, money for that. i have refocused my attitude.
like others i have made many trips to the gambia and have been saddened by the lack of i will try. it was discussed on the bantaba a while back that young people would rather be bumsters and live of tourists than work the land. result the land is going to rot.
others will remember the story i told of a family who stop me from seeing th child i supported because i woul dnot buy them a shop. result one child not in a good school, no shop and the family are getting by. DOES MONEY BRING HAPPINESS, yes because for me it brings security THATS WHAT I VALUE MOST

DOES MONEY

Security, peace of mind and freedom..that is what money can bring that is good. Possesions are not so important to happiness.

JAMBO,
I feel that sometimes "sister" is trying her best to develop the discussion in a way that makes people think about the alternative point of view even if that point is out of the mainstream of level headed peoples way of thinking, all that you have said is well noted but don't forget please that MOST Gambians have nothing and no way of getting anything, therefore if someone with something comes along that is "their chance" in life, to make a difference to the way they and their family live and in this world everywhere, that "thing" is MONEY,faith can sustain you in many ways but the sad fact is that in some ways it cannot.Your re-evaluation of your position is understandable,I would not presume to tell you what to do only you can do that.

toubab1020, tank youfor your posting, but i will help gambia in other ways, i have been ripped off, but you know i have to get over it, for my sake and theirs. if i judge gambia by the senegambia region i would be really troubled. i am happy to help in the village but i have put a strict timescale on what is being done. if i help someone to get a market stall which i did in serrunkunda it was on the understanding that i was helping the family, so what happened, they got money for school fees, and bought a ram. hat is why i was upset, they askedme for more help i said no, result one unhappy family but the are not poor. i think my problem is this, if people help you use the help wisely, money for school, rent and food is not to be spent on mobile phones and football boots.

Jambo,I understand, may I suggest that you try to complete your help whist you are in the country, you will then know what has been bought and how things are going, let your friends do the buying but you be the money man ,it is unwise in many cases to "punp money" from abroad as it will probably be diverted into other things, and you will be disappointed when you visit,as in all things do it yourself is best.Gambia is a great country but to know it you must travel a bit and meet and see the REAL people.

wise words and i am more the wiser now, but it is not always possible to be there to see the money put to use, that is why i will pay for the school fees no problem, it is other factors that come into play that annoy me, CIVIL SERVANTS can block your progress
