I have been told that the taxi service and guide service is now at over capacity. It is easy to see. For the guys to make a living they need contacts in the hotels to pass the tourists to them. On the streets there is very little 'cold' business. Most of the tour operators advise people AGAINST using locals, so they get more money for their group tours. I think this is immoral! People being told its not safe. RUBBISH!!!
As in England, a craft or skill is at high premium and could earn someone a living. SADLY many Gambias I have come across are quite arrogant about those sorts of jobs (SORRY, BUT TRUE!). They only want a job that is a 'clean job' in an office or such like. One friend of mine who is a serious muslim thinks many jobs are beneath him!!!! In England many people do boring low paid jobs to earn a living and I think people in Gambia should be prepared to do the same. Surely it is better to take any job that is offered and then from there progress, rather than sit around making tea all day?!
Well said Bave. Most Gambians dream of big office jobs. I was in the Gambia and after the holidays, there was no fishermen because they had gone home for the TOBASKI. I was in Tanjer and asked howmany fishermen were Gambians there, only to know there was none. The bomsters could have engaged in other skilled jobs. But no, most Gambians want a lot of money without hard work. This is a real problem. Gambia lacks highly trained skill wokers. Senegal is a different country. In fact most skilled workere in the Gambia are Senegalese. Gambia has more paper tigers. I hope the trend will change if the Gambians themselves notice the problem. Gambians leave for other countries and do all kind of unskilled jobes that they refuse to do in the Gambia. In Europe and America they have no choice. One could have been a bank worker in the Gambia , but in Europe he cleans toilets and collect gabbage. this is a fact. |

alhassan, i agree, i asked a gambian friend of mine what ob he thought he would d once he got to the UK, he looked at me in surprise. So I asked again, if he came to the UK what would he do for work, anything he said, i said okay cleaning is good, factory work possibility, he was horrified. Some honetly think they will come to europe and work in a bank from second day. no you come to uk work as porter, cleaner, save and go to college and get qualified for a job. this was not in his equatation, |
