sibo ,i am sure your full name in the arabic context is mariam or mary in english .if you are muslim please read suratul mariam in the quran ,it is a wonderful surah or chapter .
sibo locally comes from jankay ,so many mandinkas use to like saying mariama jankay sibo . so sibo is a nice name. |

brother mbye , i am not verse in detail as to what jankay meant .but i could only guess it to be the localise version of foriegn names. the sarahules in basse area like using Jankay as well .jankay is originally an extraction from mariam .also you know about my not being a mandinka . Touray was always MAndinka from long time ago but we took other tribes after intermarriage and settlement. so some mandinkas speakers can explain more. i am deeply interested in our traditions ,be it mandinka ,sarahule ,fula etc. i will narate a short story about fula weddings, mowdo demba and dalton should be ready .and also madiba. ahchu . there use to be a song call mariama jankay sibo .
there use to be a superstition regarding naming baby girls after mariama .it was believe that if one name your daughter after mariama she would find it difficult to concive or have babies in future. so the different varities of the name imerge .instead of saying mariama they would say sibo ,or jankay .some of this names are what the mandinaks call kanyaling names .what is a kanyaling .this are group of women who find it hard to concieve ,they form a group that involve in breaking all taboos. they are usually free agents ,they speak freely ,swear easily and involve in local intertainments. they also will wear ear rings on there male child a sysmbol of barreness or fear that the child may die.
this group of women then went on to start changing regular names into there own pertain .they believe if they call there children with the common name the child will die in infancy .so there you have many variety of unexplain names.lamin can turn into nmini ,saulayman into junkun or suntou ,and also some will use phrase to refer to there children ,like thank GOd ,survival or baluta ,etc. among fulas the naming system may take a sub-cultural trend. fulas are very diverse more than the mandinaks even. so you have many different fula diliet .
as i said many on the forum are in better position to explain our local naming system. even mbye is more wolof than sarahule. my gran father was mbye thus fanfana turn mandinka because mandinkas became majority in our local village. santan ,dembo ,koniage ,falaie ,tabora ,jity, samba ,yero.pateh,demba,baba (this is my village name)mean father ,sajor,many more. etc this are all names that are very gambian . |

I asks you because my sister inlaw is called also jankay and she even dont know her real name.
Mbay and Mbye are two, Mbay means in serrakouleh ant like my mothers name while her really name is Fatou-mata but all prefer to call her so that her actually name disappears, and Mbye i believes is a Name as well but other meaning.
